Fallon is a Roanoke, Virginia neighborhood located in southeast Roanoke. It borders the neighborhoods of Hollins on the north, Kenwood to the south and Belmont on the west. The eastern and part of the northern border is shared with the town of Vinton. Today the neighborhood is bisected by Virginia State Route 24 (Dale Avenue) and is bordered by Tinker Creek to the east. History Originally established as a neighborhood serving workers of the neighboring Roanoke Shops, the majority of the development in Fallon dates from between the 1890s and 1950s. Hollins is a Roanoke, Virginia neighborhood located in eastern Roanoke, immediately to the west of Tinker Creek. It borders the neighborhoods of Preston Park and Williamson Road on the west, Monterey, Eastgate and Wildwood on the east across Tinker Creek, and Fallon on the south. Vinton is a town in Roanoke County, Virginia, United States. The population was 8,059 at the 2020 census. Vinton is part of the Roanoke Metropolitan Statistical Area and the Roanoke Region of Virginia. History By the late 18th century, settlers began moving into the area and in 1797, the Gish family established a gristmill on Glade Creek. Afterward the area would become known as Gish's Mill. As the railroad expanded into the Roanoke Valley, Gish's Mill became a stop for the Atlantic, Mississippi and Ohio Railroad. In the late 1870s and early 1880s, the Gish family led a movement to establish a town around the train depot site. State Route 24 (SR 24) is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of Virginia. The state highway runs from U.S. Route 221 (US 221) and SR 116 in Roanoke east to US 60 in Mt. Rush. SR 24 connects Roanoke with several small communities in southern Bedford County and central Campbell County.
