Falketind
Falketind is a mountain in Årdal Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is located in the Jotunheimen mountain range inside the Utladalen Landscape Protection Area. The mountain is east of the old mountain farm, Vettismorki, and northwest of the lake Tyin. The 1820 ascent was the first known ascent on an alpine mountain in Norway. A climbing party which included Baltazar Mathias Keilhau and Christian Peder Bianco Boeck went via Snøggeken (Falkbreen) and the northern ridge. At that time the mountain was named ''Koldedalstinden'', but Aasmund Olavsson Vinje renamed the mountain ''Falketind'' more than fifty years later. In retrospect, the expedition leading to the first ascent became known as the "discovery of Jotunheimen" (''Jotunheimens oppdagelse''). Baltazar Mathias Keilhau
Balthazar Mathias Keilhau (2 November 1797 – 1 January 1858) was a Norwegian geologist and mountain pioneer. He is regarded as the founder of the discipline of geology in Norway, and has also been credited for the discovery of the Jotunheimen mountain range. Personal life Keilhau was born in Gjøvik to parish priest Johan David Bertram Keilhau and Johanne Marie Bodom. In 1830 he married Christine Kemp. His wife had been engaged to mathematician Nils Henrik Abel, a friend of Keilhau. When Abel died of tuberculosis in 1829, Keilhau was worried about his fiancé, and offered to marry her, although they had never met, and she accepted. Keilhau died in Christiania in 1858. Career Keilhau is regarded as the founder of geology in Norway. He graduated from the Christiania Cathedral School in 1816. Christian Peder Bianco Boeck
Christian Peder Bianco Boeck (September 5, 1798 – July 11, 1877) was a Norwegian doctor, zoologist, botanist and mountaineer. He is most associated with his catalog of approved drugs, ''Pharmacopoea Norvegica'' (1854) and with his studies of trilobites. Biography Boeck grew up at Kongsberg in Buskerud where his father worked for the Kongsberg Silver Mines. From 1817 he studied natural science and medicine at the Royal Frederick University (now University of Oslo). After his medical studies he traveled in Europe accompanied by Niels Henrik Abel and Baltazar Mathias Keilhau. In 1820, he made a botanically motivated expedition to Jotunheimen, with a launch point from the farm of Skrebergo in Øystre Slidre, where he had studied years before. Jotunheimen
Jotunheimen (; "the home of the Jötunn") is a mountainous area of roughly in southern Norway and is part of the long range known as the Scandinavian Mountains. The 29 highest mountains in Norway are all located in the Jotunheimen mountains, including the tall mountain Galdhøpiggen (the highest point in Norway). The Jotunheimen mountains straddle the border between Innlandet and Vestland counties (historically part of the old Oppland and Sogn og Fjordane counties). Tourism Jotunheimen is very popular with hikers and climbers, and the Norwegian Mountain Touring Association maintains a number of mountain lodges in the area, as well as marked trails that run between the lodges and others that run up to some of the peaks. Utladalen Landscape Protection Area ( no, Utladalen landskapsvernområde) is adjacent to Jotunheimen National Park, covering Utladalen, Norway's deepest valley. It is located about northeast of Øvre Årdal in the municipality of Årdal in Vestland county, Norway. The landscape protection area was established 1980 and covers about at an elevation of about above sea level. Vestland is a county in Norway established on 1 January 2020. The county is located in Western Norway and it is centred around the city of Bergen, Norway's second largest city. The administrative centre of the county is the city of Bergen, where the executive and political leadership is based, but the County Governor is based in Hermansverk. Vettismorki is an old mountain farm located just above the waterfall Vettisfossen in the Utladalen valley in Årdal Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is north of the Vetti farm, and northeast of the village of Øvre Årdal. Tyin is a lake in Vang Municipality in Innlandet county, Norway. The lake is located in the southwest part of the Jotunheimen mountain range. The lake lies in Vang Municipality in Innlandet county, but a small portion of the lake extends into Ã…rdal Municipality in Vestland county. Aasmund Olavsson Vinje
Aasmund Olavsson Vinje (6 April 1818 – 30 July 1870) was a Norwegian poet and journalist who is remembered for poetry, travel writing, and his pioneering use of LandsmÃ¥l (now known as Nynorsk). Background Vinje was born into a poor but well-read family in Vinje, Telemark. He had a voracious appetite for learning and supported himself in part by teaching. He earned his university entrance exam after attending the same school as Henrik Ibsen, studied law, and became an attorney.
