FIBT World Championships 2003
The FIBT World Championships 2003 took place in Lake Placid, New York, United States (Men's bobsleigh), Winterberg, Germany (Women's bobsleigh), and Nagano, Japan (Men's and women's Skeleton). Lake Placid hosted the championship event for the eighth time, doing so previously in 1949, 1961, 1969, 1973, 1978, 1983, and 1997 (Skeleton). Winterberg hosted the championship event for a third time, doing so previously in 1995 (Bobsleigh) and 2000 (Women's bobsleigh). This was Nagano's first time hosting a championship event. Lake Placid, New York
Lake Placid is a village in the Adirondack Mountains in Essex County, New York, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 2,303. The village of Lake Placid is near the center of the town of North Elba, southwest of Plattsburgh. Lake Placid, along with nearby Saranac Lake and Tupper Lake, comprise what is known as the Tri-Lakes region. Lake Placid hosted the 1932 and the 1980 Winter Olympics. Todd Hays
Todd Dennys Hays (born May 21, 1969) is a former American bobsledder who competed from 1994 to 2006. Competing in two Winter Olympics, he won the silver medal in the four-man event at Salt Lake City in 2002, breaking a 46-year medal drought for the US national bobsleigh team. He also won two medals in the four-man event at the FIBT World Championships with a silver in 2003 and a bronze in 2004. He finished third four times in the Bobsleigh World Cup, earning them twice in combined men's (2003-4, 2005-6) and once each in the two-man (2005–06) and four-man events (2003–04). Hays was raised in Del Rio, Texas. Prior to his bobsleigh career, Hays also was involved in American football and kickboxing. Carsten Embach
Carsten Embach (born 12 October 1968 in Stralsund) is a German bobsledder who competed from the mid-1990s to the early 2000s. Competing in two Winter Olympics, he won two medals in the four-man event with a gold in 2002 and a bronze in 1994. Biography Embach also won six medals in the four-man event at the FIBT World Championships with four golds (1995, 1997, 2000, 2003), one silver ( 2001), and one bronze ( 1996). René Hoppe (born 9 December 1976 in Oelsnitz, Saxony) is a German bobsledder who has competed since 1998. Franz Sagmeister (born 21 October 1974) is a German bobsledder who competed from 1997 to 2005. René Spies
René Spies (born 5 July 1973 in Winterberg, North Rhine-Westphalia) is a German bobsledder who competed from 1991 to 2006. He won a bronze medal in the two-man event at the 2003 FIBT World Championships in Lake Placid, New York. Competing in two Winter Olympics, Spies earned his best finish of fifth in the four-man event at Turin in 2006. His best finish in the Bobsleigh World Cup was second three times (Combined: 2002-3, Two-man: 2000-1, 2002-3). Spies retired from bobsleigh to become a television commentator in Germany, but attempted to return to the German national team for the 2007-08 season without success. Giulio Zardo
Giulio Zardo (born July 14, 1980 in Montreal, Quebec) is a high performance athlete. In 1996 he was World Junior Champion in powerlifting with the WPF, having set a world record in the deadlift with a 600lbs at a body weight of 208. Giulio went on to play football for four years, where he was league MVP for defence with the League Champion Midget AAA St. Leonard Cougars in 1997, was part of the International football tournament championship team for Canada during the 1999 Super Bowl. Zardo then went on to be an all star and was part of the league champion Champlain Cougars team in CÉGEP AAA in 1999 and 2000. Zardo then went on to compete in bobsledding from 2001 to 2004, where he was part of the Canadian Olympic team in his first year. Pierre Lueders
Pierre Fritz Lueders (born 26 September 1970) is a Canadian Olympic, world and World Cup champion bobsledder who competed from 1990 to 2010. He piloted both two-man and four-man bobsleigh, retiring after the 2010 Winter Olympics. He was named to Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 2012. Biography Lueders grew up in Edmonton and went to Winterburn School for elementary and junior high. He attended Jasper Place High School for grades 10 through 12. Kevin Kuske
Kevin Kuske (born 4 January 1979) is a former German bobsledder who competed from 1999 to 2018. Competing in five Winter Olympics, he is the most successful Olympic athlete in bobsledding, winning four gold medals and two silver medals. Career Prior to his bobsleigh career, Kuske was a sprinter athlete, and won a bronze medal in 4 x 100 m at the 1998 World Junior Championships in Athletics. At the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Kuske, along with teammates André Lange, Carsten Embach, Enrico Kühn, won the gold medal in the four-man event. André Lange (; born 28 June 1973) is a retired German bobsledder and the most successful bob pilot of all time. Competing at the 2002, 2006 and 2010 Winter Olympics, he has won four gold and one silver medals. Lange originally started his sledding career as a luger, taking up bobsleigh in 1993. At the 2002 Winter Olympics, Lange won the four-man event with teammates Carsten Embach, Enrico Kühn and Kevin Kuske.
