FF Groen
Frédéric François Groen, heer van Waarder (1814–1882) operated a shipyard in Amsterdam (FF Groen Scheepsbouwwerft de boot), located at 111 Gr Wittenburgerstraat. His son Herman Frederik (1846-1904) built at least two full-rigged sailing ships, the Vondel (1894) and Nicolaas Witsen Nicolaes Witsen (8 May 1641 – 10 August 1717; modern Dutch: ''Nicolaas Witsen'') was a Dutch statesman who was mayor of Amsterdam thirteen times, between 1682 and 1706. In 1693 he became administrator of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). In ... (1897), but neither was sold. So he operated the ships himself. In 1897 he retired, HF Groen was not married and had no children and died on 1-10-1904. His great collection of paintings and prints concerning ships were sold in 1905 as well as both ships were sold to the Hamburg shipping company Eugen Cellier. A sailing ship is a sea-going vessel that uses sails mounted on masts to harness the power of wind and propel the vessel. Nicolaes Witsen (8 May 1641 – 10 August 1717; modern Dutch: ''Nicolaas Witsen'') was a Dutch statesman who was mayor of Amsterdam thirteen times, between 1682 and 1706. In 1693 he became administrator of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). In 1689 he was extraordinary-ambassador to the English court and became Fellow of the Royal Society. In his free time, he was cartographer, maritime writer, and an authority on shipbuilding. His books on the subject are important sources on Dutch shipbuilding in the 17th century.
