FC Barcelona Ice Hockey
FC Barcelona Ice Hockey is an ice hockey club in Barcelona, Catalonia, that is part of FC Barcelona club. They currently play in the Spanish League and their home arena is the Palau de Gel. History The team was founded in 1972, after the construction of the Pista de Gel. The first title was the Cup in 1976. In the mid-eighties decade, the senior team was disbanded leaving only the junior team. In 1990 the club came back to top competition, and after that won League and Cup competitions in the 1996-97 season. The National Ice Hockey League ( es, Liga Nacional de Hockey sobre Hielo) is the top men's ice hockey league in Spain. Its governing body is the Royal Spanish Ice Sports Federation. History Liga Nacional de Hockey Hielo was established in 1972 as the ''Superliga Española de Hockey Hielo''. There were six founding teams which participated in the first season, 1972–73: Real Sociedad, CH Jaca, CH Valladolid, CG Puigcerdà, CH Madrid and CF Barcelona. In 2011, the league was composed of eight teams, but due to financial problems in almost all clubs, the league has reduced the number of participants year after year until only five of them were left. In the season 2021/2022 in order to grow ice hockey in Spain, two teams composed of non-Spanish people, and one composed of Spanish players, joined the league, bringing the number of teams back to eight, with the door open to new ones in the future. Palau de Gel, is an arena in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, belonging to FC Barcelona. The 1,256 seating capacity arena is home to the ice hockey division of FC Barcelona. It is located between Mini Estadi and the Camp Nou, few meters north of the Palau Blaugrana. The building occupies and the playing area is long by wide. History Palau de Gel was opened on 23 October 1971, along with the Palau Blaugrana. It was designed by architects Francesc Cavaller and Josep Soteras. The arena hosted several international ice hockey and figure skating tournaments. Palau de Gel has also been the scene of a World Fencing Championship and two World Roller Hockey category C championships. During the 1992 Summer Olympics, the indoor arena has served as a warm-up area for several sports including judo, taekwondo and roller hockey.
