The Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences is an academy to promote health and medical sciences in Australia. It was established in June 2014. It cites "The Academy will serve the three purposes identified as of high priority in the 2013 Strategic Review of Health and Medical Research": * Mentoring the next generation of clinician researchers * Providing independent advice to government and others on issues relating to evidence-based medical practice and medical researchers * Providing a forum for discussion on progress on medical research with an emphasis on translation of research into practice Fellowship In 2014 the academy commenced awarding the honour of "Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences" to 50 medical scientists each year. Sandra Eades
Sandra Eades (born 1967) is a Noongar physician, researcher and professor, and the first Aboriginal medical practitioner to be awarded a Doctorate of Philosophy in 2003. As of March 2020 she is Dean of Medicine at Curtin University. Early life and education Sandra Eades was born in Mount Barker, Western Australia and at the age of 12 moved to Perth with her family. In primary school she wanted to be a doctor but thought she would not have that opportunity as an Aboriginal girl. In 1985, at the age of 17, she arrived at University of Newcastle as one of four Aboriginal students selected for a special program to study medicine. She graduated from the University of Western Australia with a PhD in 2003. Louise Baur
Louise Baur AM FAHMS is an Australian paediatrician with a research interest in childhood obesity. In 2015 she was appointed professor and head of paediatrics and child health (subsequently renamed Child and Adolescent Health) at the University of Sydney, and head of The Children’s Hospital at Westmead Clinical School. Early life Baur was born in Coffs Harbour, New South Wales, Australia where her father worked as a forester. Her family moved to Sydney and she went to school at Beecroft Public School and Cheltenham Girls High School. Baur completed her education at the University of Sydney, obtaining her BSc(Med) in 1979, her MBBS(Hons) in 1981 and her PhD in 1993. Nicholas Fisk (academic)
Nicholas M. Fisk (born 12 September 1956) is an Australian maternal-fetal medicine specialist, academic and researcher. As an obstetrician, Fisk is known for inventing the natural caesarean operation, also referred to as the family centred caesarean section. He has pioneered advances in understanding fetoplacental disease and its treatment, including characterising early human fetal stem cell populations, documenting “fetal pain” and its blockade by opioid analgesia, and unravelling the vascular basis of twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome. In 2016 he was appointed as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) at the University of New South Wales (UNSW Sydney). Michelle Haber
Michelle Haber (born 18 October 1956) is an Australian cancer researcher. Haber is an Australian scientist in the field of childhood cancer research. She serves as the Executive Director of Children's Cancer Institute and is a professor at the School of Women’s and Children’s Health, University of New South Wales. She is known for her discoveries in the area of chemotherapy resistance in neuroblastoma and for translating these discoveries into new therapeutics that are currently in clinical trials. John Christodoulou (geneticist)
John Christodoulou is an Australian medical geneticist, genetic pathologist and clinical scientist. He is director of the Genetics Theme and Group Co-Leader of the Brain and Mitochondrial Research Group at Murdoch Children's Research Institute. Additionally, he holds the Chair in Genomic Medicine, Department of Paediatrics, The University of Melbourne. Annette Dobson
Annette Jane Dobson (born 4 September 1945) is a Professor of Biostatistics in the University of Queensland's Australian Women and Girl's Health Research (AWaGHR) Centre in the School of Public Health. Dobson was Director of the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health from 1995 to 2013. She is a highly cited publication author, a book author, and has received an Australia Day award. Brendan Scott Crabb FASM (born 13 September 1966) is an Australian microbiologist, research scientist and director and chief executive officer of the Burnet Institute, based in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Background and early career Educated in Papua New Guinea and Australia, Crabb received a Bachelor of Science (Honours) from the University of Melbourne in the Department of Microbiology. In 1992, he completed his PhD in virology with Michael J. Studdert at the School of Veterinary Science also at the University of Melbourne. Clare Elizabeth Collins is an Australian dietician who is Professor of Nutrition and Dietetics at the University of Newcastle. She serves as Director for Research in the School of Health Sciences and Deputy Director of the Priority Research Centre. David Albert Cooper (19 April 1949 – 18 March 2018) was an Australian HIV/AIDS researcher, immunologist, professor at the University of New South Wales, and the director of the Kirby Institute. He and Professor Ron Penny diagnosed the first case of HIV in Australia. Jeremy Robert Chapman (born 20 September 1953) is a British–Australian nephrologist, renal physician and transplant surgeon. He has been the director of the Division of Medicine and Cancer at Westmead Hospital in Sydney since 2007. Georgia Chenevix-Trench (born 8 February 1959) is an Australian cancer researcher who investigates genetic predispositions to cancer. Adele Green
Adele Chandler Green (born 20 September 1952) is an Australian epidemiological senior scientist at the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute in Brisbane and is the institute's Head of Cancer and Population Studies Group. Green is an international leader in the epidemiology of melanoma and skin cancer.
