Fred Geary
Fred Geary (23 January 1868 – 8 January 1955) was an English professional footballer who played at centre forward for Everton in the 1890s, and made two appearances for England, scoring a hat-trick on his debut. At Everton, he was a prolific goal-scorer, with 86 goals in 99 appearances, helping them to win the Football League championship for the first time in 1890–91. He was "the first Everton centre-forward to capture the imagination of their supporters" and "in his era he was as important to Everton as Dixie Dean was some years later". Football career Early days Geary was born at Hyson Green, on the outskirts of Nottingham. As a boy he won many sprinting titles on the athletics track, and was to use this speed to great effect during his football career. Walter Balmer (footballer)
Walter Balmer (28 March 1948 – 27 December 2010) was a Swiss international footballer. Club career Balmer started his youth football with his local team in Thun. He played as a right winger for FC Thun between 1964 and 1968. Between 1969 and 1976 he played for FC Basel in the Nationalliga A and won four league titles in the years 1969, 1970, 1972 and 1973. In the 1975 Swiss Cup Final Balmer scored the winning goal five minutes before the end of overtime. Balmer also won the first edition of the Swiss League Cup in 1972 with Basel. International career Between the years 1969 and 1973 Balmer played 20 games for the Swiss national team in which he scored two goals. In 1971, he scored during the 4–0 win against Turkey and in 1972 during the 1–1 draw with Denmark. On 28 June 1976 Balmer (aged just 28 years) retired from his semi-professional football career and from then on he worked as a teacher in the Gymnasium in Interlaken and also as a sport journalist. Jack Taylor (footballer, Born 1872)
John Daniel Taylor (27 January 1872 – 21 February 1949) was a Scottish professional footballer. Career Born in Dumbarton in 1872, Taylor started off his career at local club Dumbarton He signed for St Mirren in 1894. In 1896 Taylor was signed by English club Everton where he played in a number of positions. He was the only Everton player to feature in the FA Cup Finals of 1897, 1906 and 1907, finishing on the winning side in 1906. In the 1910 FA Cup semi-final against Barnsley Taylor was struck by the ball in the throat, damaging his larynx. This effectively ended his professional career and he was transferred to amateurs South Liverpool. Taylor is currently one of only 6 players to make 400 Football League appearances for Everton, making 456 in all competitions, 7th in the club's all-time appearance chart. Tom McInnes (footballer, Born 1869)
Thomas McInnes (22 March 1869 – 17 January 1939) was a Scottish professional footballer. McInnes was capped once for Scotland, against Ireland in 1889. Football career McInnes was born in Glasgow. He joined local club Cowlairs, playing as a forward, most often at outside right. His performances for Cowlairs earned him a cap for the Scotland national team, on 9 March 1889 against Ireland in the 1889 British Home Championship. Scotland won the match 7–0, and McInnes scored the last goal, in the 88th minute. McInnes scored 67 goals from 226 appearances playing as an inside forward for Notts County between 1889 and 1893. McInnes played on the losing side for Notts County against Blackburn Rovers in the 1891 FA Cup Final. During 1892, he briefly returned to Scotland to play for Rangers. Jack Southworth
John Southworth (11 December 1866 – 16 October 1956), also known as Jack and Skimmy Southworth, was an English footballer who played in the early days of professional football for Blackburn Rovers and Everton as well as being capped three times for England. He was the top scorer in the Football League in 1890–91 and 1893–94. Playing career Early career He began his football career at the age of 7 when he helped form a junior club named Inkerman Rangers. In the 1885–86 season, despite having signed professional for Chester FC earlier in the season, he turned out for Blackburn Olympic in their First Round FA Cup match. William Stewart (footballer, Born 1867)
William Stewart (born 1868) was a Scottish footballer who played in the Football League for Everton and Preston North End. Football career Initially with Black Watch, Stewart was an Army Cup winner and helped Distillery win the Irish Cup while stationed in Ireland with the Royal Scots. Preston North End bought him out of the Army. He moved to Everton in July 1893, forming a notable half back line with Johnny Holt and Dickie Boyle and playing in the 1897 FA Cup Final, a defeat to Aston Villa. Stewart was signed for Bristol City by Sam Hollis in July 1898 and finished his career as captain playing 51 games in the Southern League with Bristol City. He was noted for his long throw-ins involving a running and jumping technique that was eventually outlawed. Jack Bell (footballer, Born 1869)
John Watson Bell (6 October 1868 – 12 April 1956) was a Scottish football player and manager. Career A winger or inside-forward born in Dumbarton, Bell played with Dumbarton Union, Dumbarton, Everton, Tottenham Hotspur, Celtic, New Brighton Tower and Preston North End. During his time with Everton, he was one of a group of five men who were the first to be selected for Scotland while playing for an English club (although Bell had been capped already at Dumbarton), in the process becoming the club's first international for that nation. As well as playing for one season alongside his younger brother Laurie, previously also a Dumbarton teammate, he also helped organise the Association Footballers' Union and later served as its president; his activities in this area caused Everton to end his contract, and he switched to non-league Tottenham for a short period before returning to Scotland with Celtic, though he later returned to Goodison Park.
