Ethem Sancak
Ethem Sancak (born 1958, Siirt) is a Turkish businessman considered to have "close ties to President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan". He completed his primary and secondary education in Siirt. He graduated from Istanbul University's Faculty of Business Administration. Following graduation he worked as a journalist between 1976 and 1978. Ethem Sancak was the owner of the Star Media Group from 2004 to 2009, giving its ''Star'' newspaper a more pro-Justice and Development Party (AKP) line. Siirt
Siirt ( ar, سِعِرْد, Siʿird; hy, Սղերդ, S'gherd; syr, ܣܥܪܬ, Siirt; ku, Sêrt) is a city in southeastern Turkey and the seat of Siirt Province. The population of the city according to the 2009 census was 129,188. History Previously known as ''Saird'', in pre-Islamic times Siirt was a diocese of the Eastern Orthodox Church (''Sirte'', Σίρτη in Byzantine Greek). In the medieval times, Arzen was the main city and it competed with Hasankeyf over the control the region, Siirt was only to become a center of the region in the 14th century. But it was still dependent from Hasankeyf until the 17th century. Star Media Group (''Star Medya Grubu'', STAR Medya Yayıncılık A.Ş.) is a Turkish media group. Among other properties it owns the Star newspaper and the television channel Channel 24. The company was co-founded by Ahmet Özal and Cem Uzan and was previously part of the Uzan Holding. In 2004 Star was seized by the Turkish government, along with the other assets of the Uzan Group. The paper was transferred to the TMSF, and then sold several times. It is now again part of the Star Media Group, which was acquired by Nihat Özdemir of Rixos from Ethem Sancak in 2009, with Tevhit Karakaya acquiring 50% in 2010. ''Star'' (''Star Gazetesi'') was a high-circulation Turkish newspaper. It was established in 1999 by Star Media Group, drawing on the brand of the group's Star TV channel. At the end of 2019, the newspaper ceased its print publication, announcing it would continue news coverage online. In 2004 ''Star'' was seized by the Turkish government, along with the other assets of the Uzan Group (which owned the Star Media Group).
