Ethel Vokia
Ethel Lency Vokia is a member of the National Parliament of Solomon Islands, National Parliament of the Solomon Islands. In 2020 she became the fourth woman in the 2019-2023 Parliament and only the sixth woman ever to be elected to that Parliament. Political career Vokia's husband, Jaimie Vokia, had been elected to the Solomon Islands Parliament in 2019 as the representative of North East Guadalcanal constituency on the island of Guadalcanal. However, he was subsequently found guilty of bribing voters and was dismissed from office. His wife ran as an Independent candidate in the by-election to replace him and secured victory, defeating candidates who included the former prime minister, Derek Sikua, who had been member of parliament for North East Guadalcanal from 2006 to 2019. Sikua had originally been responsible for the electoral petition alleging bribery, which led to Jamie Vokia's dismissal. Solomon Islands
Solomon Islands is an island country consisting of six major islands and over 900 smaller islands in Oceania, to the east of Papua New Guinea and north-west of Vanuatu. It has a land area of , and a population of approx. 700,000. Its capital, Honiara, is located on the largest island, Guadalcanal. North East Guadalcanal Constituency
North East Guadalcanal is a Constituencies in Solomon Islands, parliamentary constituency electing one representative to the National Parliament of Solomon Islands, National Parliament of Solomon Islands. It is one of eight constituencies in Guadalcanal Province. It had an electorate of 5,584 in 2006. The North East Guadalcanal constituency has existed since the First Parliament in 1976. Guadalcanal (; indigenous name: ''Isatabu'') is the principal island in Guadalcanal Province of Solomon Islands, located in the south-western Pacific, northeast of Australia. It is the largest island in the Solomon Islands by area, and the second by population (after Malaita). The island is mainly covered in dense tropical rainforest and has a mountainous hinterland. Guadalcanal's first charting by westerners was under the Spanish expedition of Álvaro de Mendaña in 1568. The name comes from the village of Guadalcanal, in the province of Seville, in Andalusia, Spain, birthplace of Pedro de Ortega Valencia, a member of Mendaña's expedition. Freda Tuki Soriocomua (usually referred to as Freda Soria Comua) is a politician of Solomon Islands who served as Minister of Rural Development from 15 December 2014 to 18 August 2015 and subsequently as Minister of Women, Youth, and Children's Affairs from 18 August 2015 to 8 October 2018 when she was removed from office after being found guilty of vote buying or corruption by the Solomon Islands High Court. Lanelle Olandrea Tanangada (born 1 July 1979) is a Solomon Islands teacher and politician who has served as the country's Education Minister since April 2020. Early life and education Lanelle Oleandra Tanangada was born on 1 July 1979 in Western Province. Her father is part Ranongga and Vella and her mother is from Marovo Lagoon. Her parents were Seventh-day Adventist missionaries and she has one elder brother. She attended SDA mission primary schools in Honiara and Betikama Adventist High School. Tanangada undertook undergraduate studies at the Pacific Adventist University in Papua New Guinea and received a Master of Education from the University of Waikato in New Zealand in 2013, with a thesis titled ''A study of language use in secondary school classrooms in the Solomon Islands: Conceptions, practices and proficiencies''. Lillian Maefai
Lillian Maefai was a member of the Parliament of the Solomon Islands. She was only the fifth woman ever to be elected to that parliament. Early life Lillian "Lilly" Maefai was born on the island of Malaita, the most populous island in the Solomon Islands. She graduated with secretarial qualifications from the Honiara Solomon Islands College of Higher Education and then worked for more than a decade at the Solomon Star newspaper, where her husband also worked. The couple than left the paper to start a small printing company. Honiara () is the capital and largest city of Solomon Islands, situated on the northwestern coast of Guadalcanal. , it had a population of 92,344 people. The city is served by Honiara International Airport and the seaport of Point Cruz, and lies along the Kukum Highway.
