Esk is a town and locality in the Somerset Region in South East Queensland, Australia. In the , Esk had a population of 1,698 people. Geography Esk is approximately northwest of Ipswich on the Brisbane Valley Highway. It was named after the River Esk in Scotland and England. It is the administrative centre of the Somerset Region. The town of Esk is contained in the Queensland electoral district of Nanango. History Jagara (also known as Jagera, Yagara, Yugarabul, Yuggera and Yuggerabul) is one of the Aboriginal languages of South-East Queensland. There is some uncertainty over the status of Jagara as a language, dialect or perhaps a group or clan within the local government boundaries of Ipswich City Council, Lockyer Regional Council and the Somerset Regional Council. The Shire of Esk was a local government area in South East Queensland, Australia, located about west - northwest of Brisbane. It stretched from the Lockyer Valley north and west to the Great Dividing Range and up the valley of the Brisbane River. Esk covered an area of , and existed from 1879 until its merger with the Shire of Kilcoy to form the Somerset Region on 15 March 2008. History The Durundur Division was incorporated on 11 November 1879 under the ''Divisional Boards Act 1879'' with a population of 1428. Its name was changed to Esk Division on 2 June 1880 by proclamation. Whitsunday Islands
The Whitsunday Islands are 74 continental islands of various sizes off the central coast of Queensland, Australia, north of Brisbane. The northernmost of the islands are off the coast by the town of Bowen, while the southernmost islands are off the coast by Proserpine. Mungo ESK
The Mungo ESK (Einsatzfahrzeug Spezialisierte Kräfte) is an air-transportable, armoured multirole transport vehicle operated by the Airmobile Operations Division and the Rapid Forces Division of the German Army. The Mungo is based on the Multicar M30/FUMO and is produced by Krauss-Maffei Wegmann. Delivery of 396 Mungos to the German Army began in 2005. In 2007 all Mungos deployed to the ISAF mission were withdrawn, because the Mungo proved incapable of withstanding the harsh terrain and road conditions of Afghanistan. However, in 2008 the problems were fixed and Mungos were redeployed in Afghanistan. Elbe Lateral Canal
The Elbe Lateral Canal (german: Elbe-Seitenkanal; ), is a long canal in Lower Saxony, Germany. It runs from the Mittelland Canal near Gifhorn to the Elbe in Artlenburg. It forms an important transport connection between southern and northern Germany, and it provides a bypass of a section of the Elbe with limited navigability. At the construction start it was also thought as a bypass outside the GDR, considered politically unreliable. Construction of the Elbe Lateral Canal was started in 1968, and the canal was opened in June 1976. Due to a dam rupture, it was closed from July 1976 until June 1977. The difference in elevation between the Mittelland Canal and the Elbe is , which is overcome by a lock at Uelzen and the Scharnebeck twin ship lift, a boat lift at Scharnebeck. Esk Highway
The Esk Highway (route number A4) is a highway in Tasmania, Australia. It connects the Midland Highway, located down the centre of the state, with the Tasman Highway, which is located on the east coast of the state. Its western end joins the Midland Highway at Conara Junction, just north of Campbell Town. Its eastern end passes through St Marys and then deviates to a north-east direction, where it connections to the Tasman Highway. Another road, which follows a path south-east of St Marys, joins another part of the Tasman Highway at Chain of Lagoons - although this is also marked as route A4, it is named Elephant Pass Road and is not part of the Esk Highway.
