Ernesto Duarte Brito
Ernesto Duarte Brito (Jovellanos (Cuba), November 7, 1922 – Madrid, Spain, March 4, 1988) was a Cuban musician, author of the bolero ''Cómo fue'', whose performance by Benny Moré became very famous. There are many versions of this bolero all over the world. He was the father of the multi-instrumentalist, composer and arranger Tito Duarte. Artistic career He was a composer and producer, conductor and arranger. Among the many songs he composed, the most outstanding are ''Nicolasa'', ''El baile del pingüino'', ''Bájate de esa nube'', ''Anda dilo ya'', ''Cicuta tibia'', ''Arrímate cariñito'', ''Dónde estabas tú'', ''Qué chiquitico es el mundo'', etc. As a producer, he launched to fame, first with the record label "Gema", founded with Guillermo Alvarez Guedes, and later with his own label "Duarte",Díaz Ayala, Cristóbal. Jovellanos
Jovellanos is a municipality and town in the Matanzas Province of Cuba. Overview The municipality is divided into the barrios of Asunción, Isabel, Realengo and San José. It was founded in 1842 as Corral de la Bemba on the location of an old ranch called ''Bemba''. It took its current name in 1870, in honor of the Spanish writer Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos. The same year it achieved the status of ''villa'' (town). Jovellanos is also called "Bemba" by its inhabitants and locals. "Bemba" means "big lip" in Cuban Spanish; this term refers to the black population of the city. To outsiders, it may have negative racial overtones, but in the city this is not the case. Inside Jovellanos, the black and white population for the most part live harmoniously, side by side. Therefore, "Bemba" is an affectionate name for the town used by locals. Benny Moré
Bartolomé Maximiliano Moré Gutiérrez (24 August 1919 – 19 February 1963), better known as Benny Moré (also spelled Beny Moré), was a Cuban singer, bandleader and songwriter. Due to his fluid tenor voice and his great expressivity, he was known variously as ''El Bárbaro del Ritmo'' and ''El Sonero Mayor''. Moré was a master of the – the art of vocal improvisation in son cubano – and many of his tunes developed this way. He often took part in ''controversias'' (vocal duels) with other singers like Cheo Marquetti and Joseíto Fernández. Apart from ''son cubano'', Moré was a popular singer of guarachas, cha cha cha, mambo, son montuno, and boleros. Ernesto Duarte Hernández known as Tito Duarte (born Havana, Cuba, August 7, 1946 - died Córdoba, Spain, July 14, 2003), was a Cuban musician, instrumentalist and arranger. Artistic career Tito Duarte was the son of composer and director Ernesto Duarte Brito, who worked with artists such as Benny Moré and Celia Cruz, as well as working as a director in record companies in the middle of the 20th century. The Duartes left Cuba and settled in Madrid after Fidel Castro's revolution. His father worked for the RCA label, while he, who had already played with his father's orchestra in Cuba, revealed himself as an instrumentalist and arranger. Tito Duarte played percussions, sax, flutes, keyboards, bass, and was also an arranger for songs of various bands, such as Barrabás (founded by Fernando Arbex), and Miguel Ríos' band (''Concierto de Rock y Amor'', 1972). Celeste Mendoza
Celeste Mendoza (born Santiago de Cuba 6 April 1930, died Havana 22 November 1998), was a Cuban singer. Biography Celeste Mendoza was born in Santiago de Cuba in 1930. She was best known for her singing of guaguancos, the music of the street rumbas, a form of music previously almost exclusively associated with male singers. She started her professional career as a dancer, appearing at various cabarets, including shows choreographed by "Rodney" Neyras at the Tropicana. In the late 1950s she signed with Gema Records, and made a series of recordings with Bebo Valdez's orchestra. She also recorded with Ernesto Duarte Brito's band. Xiomara Alfaro
Xiomara Alfaro (May 11, 1930 – June 24, 2018) was a Cuban coloratura soprano. Her interpretation of Cuban composer and pianist Ernesto Lecuona's "Siboney" was the composer's favorite. Early life Alfaro was born in Havana. She was a musical child, and won a contest for young singers sponsored by Radio Suaritos; she regularly appeared on Radio Suaritos broadcasts, which led to further opportunities. Her sister Olympia Alfaro was also known a singer. Career Alfaro was a star of the Cuban music scene of the 1950s.
