Eric Heenan (politician)
Eric Heenan (29 April 1900 – 26 June 1998) was an Australian politician. He was born in Kanowna, Western Australia to Michael Joseph Heenan and Josephine Frances (McCarthy) and educated at CBC Wakefield Street Adelaide, South Australia, Articled to Neville Heenan in Northam Practiced Law in the Western Australian goldfields and Perth. Member of the Western Australian Legislative Council from 1936 to 1968 . Married Joan McKenna, one child Eric Michael Heenan. Kanowna, Western Australia
Kanowna is a ghost town in the Goldfields region of Western Australia, about east of Kalgoorlie. It is sited on Maduwongga tribal lands. At the 2016 census, Kanowna had a population of 10 people. After the discovery of gold in the area in 1893, the townsite was gazetted in 1894. and the population grew from 2,500 in 1897 to over 12,500 by 1899. However, the alluvial gold supply was rapidly exhausted and underground mines following the outcropping vein produced decreasing amounts of gold, resulting in a slow but steady decrease in the population. The railway station was closed during the Great Depression, and by 1953 the town had been abandoned. The railway station platform, two cemeteries and mine workings are all that is left of the original town of Kanowna. Signs erected by the Eastern Goldfields Historical Society mark the sites of significant buildings. HMAT Boonah
HMAT ''Boonah'' was built in Germany in 1912 for the Australian trade, and known as the ''Melbourne''. In Sydney at the outbreak of World War I in 1914, she was seized by the Government of Australia, Commonwealth Government, renamed ''Boonah'', and hastily converted to a troopship. In October 1918, near the end of the war, ''Boonah'' was the last Australian troop ship to leave Fremantle, Western Australia, bound for the Middle East. Carrying about 1200 soldiers of the First Australian Imperial Force, she arrived in Durban, South Africa just three days after the Armistice with Germany (Compiègne), armistice was signed and on hearing the news, made arrangements to return home promptly. Before her departure however, local stevedores from the Spanish flu stricken city were used to load and unload supplies from the ship and in the course of doing so infected soldiers who were billeted in crowded conditions throughout the ship.
