En Avant (album)
''Ferdinand En Avant, Huit Chansons en Huit Langues'' ( en, Ferdinand Forward, Eight Songs in Eight Languages), often referred to as ''En Avant'', is the second solo album by French avant-rock bass guitarist and composer, Ferdinand Richard. It was recorded in 1983 at Sunrise Studios in Kirchberg, Switzerland, and was released on LP record by the Recommended Records affiliated Swiss independent record label, RecRec Music the same year. ''En Avant'' consists of eight avant-rock songs sung in English, Vietnamese, Arabic, Polish, Dioula, Spanish, French and German. The music was scored for two bass guitars and a cello by Richard, who also wrote the lyrics for, and sang seven of the eight songs. The lyrics for the songs on ''En Avant'' are printed in the album liner notes in English, French and German.''En Avant'' liner notes. Ferdinand Richard
Hervé Richard (born 25 June 1950), better known as Ferdinand Richard, is a French avant-rock bass guitarist and composer. Richard was a founding member of the French avant-rock group Etron Fou Leloublan in 1973, and remained with them until they broke up in 1986. He was also a member of Alfred Harth's group Gestalt et Jive in the mid-1980s, and collaborated with Fred Frith in 1989 to record '' Dropera'' (1991). Richard also formed his own group, Ferdinand et les Philosophes in 1990, and recorded two solo albums, ''En Forme!!'' (1981) and '' En Avant'' (1983). Recommended Records (RēR) is a British independent record label and distribution network founded by Chris Cutler with Nick Hobbs in March 1978. RēR features largely "Rock in Opposition" and related music, but it also distributes selected music released on other independent labels. In 1982 Cutler established November Books, the publishing wing of Recommended Records, and between 1985 and 1997, Recommended Records and November Books published ''RēR Quarterly'', a "quarterly" sound-magazine edited by Cutler. Saint-Malo (, , ; Gallo: ; ) is a historic French port in Ille-et-Vilaine, Brittany, on the English Channel coast. ''Dropera'' is a concept album by Fred Frith and Ferdinand Richard, credited as "Fred & Ferd". It was their first collaborative album as a duo and was recorded in Zürich, Switzerland in August 1989. It was released on both LP and CD by RecRec Music in Switzerland in 1991. The album's songs were sung in French and a booklet of the song lyrics in French, German and English accompanied the album. Background English experimental guitarist/composer Fred Frith and French experimental bass guitarist/composer Ferdinand Richard had previously worked together in other contexts before coming together as a duo to record this album. Henry Cow
Henry Cow were an English experimental rock group, founded at the University of Cambridge in 1968 by multi-instrumentalists Fred Frith and Tim Hodgkinson. Henry Cow's personnel fluctuated over their decade together, but drummer Chris Cutler, bassist John Greaves, and bassoonist/oboist Lindsay Cooper were important long-term members alongside Frith and Hodgkinson. An inherent anti-commercial attitude kept them at arm's length from the mainstream music business, enabling them to experiment at will. Critic Myles Boisen writes, " heir soundwas so mercurial and daring that they had few imitators, even though they inspired many on both sides of the Atlantic with a blend of spontaneity, intricate structures, philosophy, and humor that has endured and transcended the ' progressive' tag." Fred Frith
Jeremy Webster "Fred" Frith (born 17 February 1949) is an English multi-instrumentalist, composer, and improviser. Probably best known for his guitar work, Frith first came to attention as one of the founding members of the English avant-rock group Henry Cow. He was also a member of the groups Art Bears, Massacre, and Skeleton Crew. He has collaborated with a number of prominent musicians, including Robert Wyatt, Derek Bailey, the Residents, Lol Coxhill, John Zorn, Brian Eno, Mike Patton, Lars Hollmer, Bill Laswell, Iva Bittová, Jad Fair, Kramer, the ARTE Quartett, and Bob Ostertag. Gestalt et Jive were a multinational avant-rock group founded in West Germany in 1984 by multi-instrumentalist Alfred Harth, comprising Steve Beresford ( UK), Anton Fier ( US), Alfred Harth (FRG), Peter Hollinger (FRG), Ferdinand Richard ( F) and Uwe Schmitt (FRG). In 1980 Harth produced the LP ''Es herrscht Uhu im Land'' on JAPO/ ECM with the idea of integrating punk rock, free jazz and classical music and followed this design throughout the 1980s in the groups Cassiber, Duck and Cover, ''Gestalt et Jive'' and Vladimir Estragon. The compact disc (CD) is a Digital media, digital optical disc data storage format that was co-developed by Philips and Sony to store and play digital audio recordings.
