Elmore Houses
The Elmore Houses are a pair of historic farmhouses at 78 and 87 Long Hill Road in South Windsor, Connecticut. The two houses, one built before 1819 and restyled in the 1840s, and the other one built new in the 1840s, are locally important rural examples of Greek Revival architecture. They were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. Description and history The Elmore Houses are located on southwestern South Windsor, on either side of Long Hill Road just south its crossing of Interstate 291. Number 78 is the older of the two houses: it is a -story wood-frame structure, with a gabled roof, central chimney, and an exterior of asbestos siding over original wooden clapboards. The main entrance is at the center of its five-bay facade; it has a Greek Revival surround built around the entrance, which is topped by a more Federal appearing fanlight. South Windsor, Connecticut
South Windsor is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 26,918 at the 2020 census. History In 1659, Thomas Burnham (1617–1688) purchased the tract of land now covered by the towns of South Windsor and East Hartford from Tantinomo, chief sachem of the Podunk Indians. Burnham lived on the land and later willed it to his nine children. Beginning in the middle of the 17th century, a few settlers from Windsor began using land on the east bank of the Connecticut River for grazing and farming purposes. By 1700, a number of families had made their homes in the area. In 1768, the residents of the area were allowed to incorporate as the separate town of East Windsor, though the area was informally referred to as East Windsor before this time. Interstate 291 (Connecticut)
Interstate 291 (I-291) is a short auxiliary Interstate Highway in the state of Connecticut that starts at I-91 at its junction with Route 218 in Windsor and ends at I-84 and I-384 in Manchester. It serves as a northeastern bypass of Hartford. According to the Federal Highway Administration, the official length of I-291 is ; however, the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) includes the of the exit ramp that I-291 uses to merge with eastbound I-84, making their recorded length long. I-291 is also known as the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Highway for its entire length.
