Elliot Lake Standard
The ''Elliot Lake Standard'' is a weekly newspaper, published in Elliot Lake, Ontario. Owned by Postmedia, the paper publishes each Thursday and serves much of the North Shore region, including Iron Bridge, Blind River, Spanish and Sables-Spanish Rivers. The paper was first published in the 1880s on St. Joseph Island, as the ''St. Joseph Island Herald''. Following the emergence of Elliot Lake as the region's principal community in the 1950s, the paper moved to the city and became the ''Elliot Lake Standard'' in 1957. A weekly newspaper is a general-news or Current affairs (news format), current affairs publication that is issued once or twice a week in a wide variety broadsheet, magazine, and electronic publishing, digital formats. Similarly, a biweekly newspaper is published once every two weeks. Elliot Lake
Elliot Lake is a city in Algoma District, Ontario, Canada. It is north of Lake Huron, midway between the cities of Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie in the Northern Ontario region. Once dubbed the "uranium capital of the world," Elliot Lake has since diversified to a hub for forest harvesting, mine reclamation expertise, and advanced manufacturing. Elliot Lake is now known as a place for affordable retirement living, waterfront cottage lots and as a four-season destination. History Prior to the settlement of the city, a seasonal Ojibwa village extended along the lake's shoreline near the present hospital. The town takes its name from the lake. North Channel (Ontario)
The North Channel is the body of water along the north shore of Lake Huron, in the Canadian province of Ontario. It stretches approximately 160 nautical miles (300 km) and is bordered on the east by Georgian Bay, on the west by the St. Marys River, to the north by the eastern Algoma District and part of the Sudbury District, and to the south by the islands of Manitoulin, Cockburn, Drummond and St. Joseph. At its widest point it is over 30 km (20 miles) wide. In addition to Georgian Bay, the North Channel is connected to the main body of Lake Huron by the False Detour Channel and the Mississagi Strait, which separate the above-noted islands. Blind River, Ontario
Blind River is a town situated on the North Channel of Lake Huron in the Algoma District, Ontario, Canada. The town, named after the nearby Blind River, celebrated its centennial in 2006. History French explorers discovered the North Channel and made it a renowned voyageur route. Fur traders, loggers and miners followed to seek natural resources. A fur trading post was established by the North West Company in 1789 at the mouth of the Mississagi River. When the fur trade slowed about 1820, the Hudson's Bay Company purchased the North West Company. A number of trappers settled along the rivers flowing into Lake Huron. One of the rivers, just three miles (5 km) east of the Mississagi mouth, was called Penewobecong, which translates to "smooth rock or sloping". Sables-Spanish Rivers is a Township (Canada), township in Ontario, Canada, on the north shore of Georgian Bay.
