Elena Mikhailovskaya
Elena Konstantinovna Mikhailovskaya (russian: Елена Константиновна Михайловская; November 21, 1949, Moscow, USSR – February 4, 1995, Moscow, Russia) was the first female World champion in international draughts. She won this title five times in a row (1973–1977). Before that she was four-time champion of the Soviet Union in Russian checkers (1969–1972). Later she was coaching and heading the Moscow draughts federation. Biography As a child, Elena Mikhailovskaya was enjoying active sports, but at the age of 15 health issues forced her to settle down. She intended to start playing chess seriously but ended up in a draughts club. In about a year she won a personal-team youth championship of the Soviet Union with the Moscow team, and in 1968 she won the individual championship as well. Ludmilla Meijler-Sochnenko
Ludmilla Meijler-Sochnenko (born in Minsk, Belarus) is a Belarusian female draughts player. She was the women's world champion in 1979. Career Meijler-Sochnenko started playing at age 14, later than most professional players. Nine years later, in 1979, she became the women's world champion. She participated in the world championships in 1980 and 1981, where she twice finished second and again in 1987, coming third. She won the draughts women's championship of the Soviet Union in 1979 and finished second in the same tournament in 1977 and 1982. she was a fanatic competitor, and trained 5-6 hours every day. Her trainer Michael Kats had a large influence on women's Draughts, and his disciples included world champions Ludmilla Sochnenko, Zoja Golubeva and Elena Altsjoel. De Lier
De Lier () is a village in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Westland, and lies about 5 km north of Maassluis. It also lies about below sea level. The village of De Lier obtained its name from the name of an old river called . De Lier used to be a separate municipality. On 26 March 1963 it was granted their coat of arms and on 14 April 1965, it adopted their modern-day flag. Vagankovo Cemetery
Vagankovo Cemetery (russian: Ваганьковское кладбище, Vagan'kovskoye kladbishche), established in 1771, is located in the Presnya district of Moscow. It started in the aftermath of the Moscow plague riot of 1771 outside the city proper, so as to prevent the contagion from spreading. Half a million people are estimated to have been buried at Vagankovo throughout its history. As of 2010, the existing cemetery contains more than 100,000 graves. The vast necropolis contains the mass graves from the Battle of Borodino, the Battle of Moscow, and the Khodynka Tragedy. It is the burial site for a number of people from the artistic and sports community of Russia and the old Soviet Union. Draughts World Championship
The Draughts World Championship is the world championship in international draughts and is held every two years. In the even year following the tournament, the World Title match takes place. The men's championship began in 1885 in France and since 1948 it's organised by the World Draughts Federation (FMJD). The men's championship has had winners from the Netherlands, Canada, the Soviet Union, Senegal, Latvia, and Russia. The current men's champion is Roel Boomstra. Since 1998, there is also a Draughts World Championship held with the blitz time control (5 minutes plus an increment of 5 seconds per move), and since 2014 also with the rapid time control (15 min + 5 sec per move).
