Electoral District Of Stafford
Stafford is a Legislative Assembly of Queensland electoral district in the state of Queensland, Australia. It is located in the inner northern residential suburbs of Brisbane. Suburbs in the current electorate include Stafford, Gordon Park, Grange, Kedron, Stafford Heights, and parts of Chermside, Chermside West, McDowall, Alderley, Wilston, Newmarket and Windsor. The Electorate includes the Prince Charles Hospital. Stafford was first formed in 1972, when it was won by Labor's Roy Harvey. This changed in 1974 when the seat went to Liberal Terry Gygar. Gygar held the seat until 1983, at which point he lost it to Labor's Denis Murphy, but after Murphy's death Gygar was able to retake the seat at the 1984 Stafford by-election. Gygar was re-elected in 1986 but lost the seat in 1989 to Labor's Rod Welford. In 1992 the seat was abolished, and Welford moved to Everton. Chermside West, Queensland
Chermside West is a suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Chermside West had a population of 6,458 people. Parts of Chermside West were formerly known as Craigslea. Geography Chermside West is located by road north of the Brisbane GPO. History The name Chermside honours Queensland Governor, Sir Herbert Chermside. St Gerard Majella's Catholic Church opened in 1962 in Pullford Road. In 1977 the congregation opened the current church in Maundrell Terrace, and the Pullford Road church was later acquired by the Kedron Brook Christadelphians. The Prince of Peace Lutheran Church opened a church in Maundrell Terrace about 1965. In 1984 the church established the Prince of Peace Lutheran Primary School in Everton Hills. Elections were held in the Australian state of Queensland on 22 October 1983 to elect the 82 members of the state's Legislative Assembly. The election resulted in a sixth consecutive term of office for the National Party under Joh Bjelke-Petersen. It was the tenth election win for the National Party in Queensland since it first came to office in 1957. Background The election was triggered when a number of Liberal MLAs, including Welfare Services Minister Terry White, crossed the floor of the Parliament to support a Labor motion to create an Expenditure Review Committee. White was sacked from cabinet for supporting the motion. Terry Gygar
Terence Joseph "Terry" Gygar, (born 21 October 1947), is an Australian academic and a former member of the Queensland Parliament. He is a former Army officer and served in Vietnam. Gygar was the member for Stafford in the Queensland Parliament, representing the Liberal Party, from 1974 until 1983, and again from 1984 to 1989. During that time he held various shadow portfolios. During his time in parliament he was awarded the Chevening scholarship for study at the London School of Economics. Following his Parliamentary service Gygar completed a Bachelor of Laws with Honours from Bond University. He is a barrister at the Supreme Court of Queensland, the High Court of Australia and the Federal Court of Australia. He has taught at Bond University since 1992 and is a foundation member of the Asia Pacific Law Deans' Association. The Liberal Party of Australia (Queensland Division), branded as Liberal Queensland, was the Queensland division of the Liberal Party of Australia until 2008. It was initially formed in October 1943 as the Queensland People's Party (QPP), which then absorbed the disbanded Queensland branch of the United Australia Party in 1944. In 1945, the QPP had an agreement with the newly formed Liberal Party, where in the "federal sphere", QPP would be the Queensland division of the Liberal Party and would run its candidates under the Liberal Party banner in federal elections. Elections were held in the Australian state of Queensland on 7 December 1974 to elect the 82 members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland. The National-Liberal Coalition won a third consecutive victory under Joh Bjelke-Petersen, and the seventh consecutive victory for the National Party in Queensland, which had renamed itself from the Country Party since the previous election. Roy Harvey
William Charles Roy Harvey (6 January 1921 – 23 April 2006), was Lord Mayor of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia from 1982 until 1985. A member of the Labor Party, he spent a total of 27 years on the Council. History Harvey was elected for seven three year terms as an Alderman of the Brisbane City Council representing the Council Ward of Kedron 1952–1973. He was the Labor member for Stafford in the Queensland Legislative Assembly from 1972–1974. Prince Charles Hospital ( cy, Ysbyty'r Tywysog Siarl) is a district general hospital in Gurnos, Merthyr Tydfil, Wales. It is managed by the Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board. Newmarket is a north-west suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Newmarket had a population of 4,979 people. Geography Newmarket is located approximately by road from the Brisbane GPO. It is an older, mostly residential suburb containing pre-war and post-war homes, including many fine examples of the Queenslander style of home.
