Electoral District Of Leichhardt (Queensland)
Leichhardt was an Queensland Legislative Assembly electoral districts, electoral district of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland, Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1860 to 1932. Taking in areas of central Queensland west of the Great Dividing Range, the district in its original form stretched as far as Mackay, Queensland, Mackay in the north and as far south as Taroom, Queensland, Taroom. Originally a dual member constituency, it was one of the sixteen districts contested at the 1860 Queensland colonial election, first colonial election in 1860. It became a single member constituency in 1873 but reverted to being a dual member electorate in 1878. A single member constituency again in 1888, it remained that way thereafter. One of the district's first members was Robert Herbert, the first Premier of Queensland. Tom Foley (Australian Politician)
Thomas Andrew Foley (26 April 1886 – 5 February 1973) was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life Foley was born in Charters Towers to Andrew Foley and his wife Margaret (née McKeegan). He was educated at Charters Towers State School and later studied at night school. After he left school Foley held various jobs before becoming a contractor, supplying timber sleepers to the railways. The Australian Labor Party (Queensland Branch), commonly known as Queensland Labor or as just Labor inside Queensland, is the state branch of the Australian Labor Party in the state of Queensland. It has functioned in the state since the 1880s. History Trade unionists in Queensland had begun attempting to secure parliamentary representation as early as the mid-1880s. William McNaughton Galloway, the president of the Seamen's Union, mounted an unsuccessful campaign as an independent in an 1886 by-election. A Workers' Political Reform Association was founded to nominate candidates for the 1888 election, at which the Brisbane Trades and Labor Council endorsed six candidates. Thomas Glassey won the seat of Bundamba at that election, becoming the first self-identified "labor" MP in Queensland. Herbert Hardacre
Herbert Freemont Hardacre (7 March 1861 – 5 March 1938) was a politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly from 1893 until 1919. Politics Herbert Hardacre was elected to the Queensland Legislative Assembly having won Leichhardt at the 1893 colonial election as the Labor Party candidate. He was Secretary for Public Lands and Secretary for Agriculture from 1 December 1899 to 7 December 1899. He was Secretary for Public Instruction from 1 June 1915 to 9 September 1919. He held Leichhardt until he resigned on 14 October 1919 in order to take up an appointment in the Land Court. Charles Boydell Dutton (16 August 1834 – 5 February 1904), was pastoralist and politician in colonial Queensland. Early life Dutton was born in Singleton, New South Wales, the son of Henry Pelerin Dutton (c. 1803 – 30 January 1870), a Hunter River squatter, and his wife Sophia Hume Dutton, ''née'' Bell (c. 1804 – 18 August 1889). Politics Dutton was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly for Leichhardt from 23 August 1883 to 5 May 1888 and Secretary for Lands from 13 November 1883 to 30 August 1887; Secretary for Works and Mines from the latter date till 12 December 1887; and from that date till 13 June 1888 Secretary for Railways in the First Griffith Ministry. John MacFarlane (Queensland Politician)
John MacFarlane (1823 – 10 April 1880) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography MacFarlane was born in Glasgow, Scotland, the son of David Macfarlane and his wife Margaret (née Gibb). He arrived in Victoria around 1840 where he engaged in Squatting pursuits. In 1865 he moved to Queensland and as a member of a Victorian firm, took up Oakey Creek run on the Mackenzie River in Central Queensland. Like most stations in the area it proved unsuitable for sheep and after four years he moved to Rockhampton where he established a successful stock and station agent.
