Electoral District Of Mornington
The electoral district of Mornington is an electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. The electorate can be described as outer metropolitan and rural, including animal farming, grape production and wineries. The district is 155 square kilometres in area. It was first created in 1859 when the Electoral district of Evelyn and Mornington was abolished and split in two. The district of Mornington initially included the entire Mornington Peninsula, Phillip Island and French Island. Currently it includes Mornington, Mount Eliza, Mount Martha and Tuerong, and parts of Baxter and Moorooduc. Mornington has been held by the Liberal Party since it was re-created in 1985. Christopher John Crewther (born 6 August 1983) is an Australian politician. William Lyall (politician)
William Lyall (June 1821 – 20 January 1888) was a Melbourne businessman and, later, pastoralist, who established a model farm in Murrumbeena, Victoria, to experiment with novel agricultural and animal husbandry methods. He lived with his family for many years on a working station at Tooradin in the Westernport Bay district. He pursued practical and adventurous farming practices, and also held a number of public offices. Lyall was born in Foveran, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, and the family emigrated to Van Diemen's Land (later named Tasmania) when he was in his teens. Robin Cooper (Australian Politician)
Robert Fitzgerald "Robin" Cooper (25 April 1936 – 23 November 2021) is a former Australian politician. Roberts Christian "Bob" Dunstan DSO (5 November 1922 – 11 October 1989) was an Australian soldier and aviator during the Second World War. He was notable, among other things, for: * serving with the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) as an air gunner, after losing a leg in action with the Australian Army; * being the youngest Australian recipient of the Distinguished Service Order (DSO), and; * being, at the time he was elected, the youngest ever member of the Legislative Assembly of Victoria. William Leggatt
Sir William Watt Leggatt (23 December 1894 – 27 November 1968) was an Australian soldier, lawyer and politician. He served as commanding officer of the 2/40th Battalion and later Sparrow Force during the Second World War, fighting in Timor against the Japanese invasion in 1942. United Australia Party
The United Australia Party (UAP) was an Australian political party that was founded in 1931 and dissolved in 1945. The party won four federal elections in that time, usually governing in coalition with the Country Party. It provided two prime ministers: Joseph Lyons ( 1932–1939) and Robert Menzies ( 1939–1941). The UAP was created in the aftermath of the 1931 split in the Australian Labor Party. Six fiscally conservative Labor MPs left the party to protest the Scullin Government's financial policies during the Great Depression. Led by Joseph Lyons, a former Premier of Tasmania, the defectors initially sat as independents, but then agreed to merge with the Nationalist Party and form a united opposition. Alfred Kirton
Alfred James Kirton (14 April 1877 – 20 April 1960) was an Australian politician. He was born in Ballarat to bookmaker Emanuel Kirton and Jane Milburn. He left school at the age of twelve to work for a draper, and from the age of fifteen worked in a Melbourne warehouse. Around 1901 he married Edith Augusta Pope, with whom he had two daughters; he would remarry in 1911, to Alice Emily Rouvray, with whom he had a further three children. He ran a bakery in Brunswick from 1913 until 1921, when he retired to Mornington. He served on Mornington Shire Council from 1926 to 1952 and was twice president (1927–28, 1947–48). Herbert Downward
Herbert Edward Graham Downward (25 April 1880 – 5 July 1973) was an Australian politician. He was born in Emerald Hill to Alfred Downward and Josephine Kerr. He was educated in Mornington, and managed the family property there before he inherited it. On 31 May 1916 he married Eileen May Edwards, with whom he had three sons. He served on Flinders Shire Council from 1917 to 1920 and Mornington Shire Council from 1919 to 1931, serving as president of the latter from 1922 to 1923 and from 1929 to 1930. Alfred Downward (1847 – 26 June 1930) was an Australian politician. Born in Melbourne to Edward and Elizabeth Downward, he was educated at Prahran and Mornington before working on his father's Balnarring sheep farm. From 1874, he had his own property and was highly involved in settlement on the Mornington Peninsula. In 1879, he married Josephine Kerr at Hawthorn, with whom he had five children. He was a member of Flinders and Kangerong Shire Council for twenty-five years, serving as president from 1890 to 1892, and was also a Mornington Shire Councillor and president. Louis Smith (Australian Politician)
Louis Lawrence Smith (15 May 1830 – 8 July 1910) was an Australian physician and politician. He was born in London, to theatre proprietor Edward Tyrell Smith and his wife Madeline Hanette Gengoult. Louis attended St Saviour's Grammar School and the Ecole de Médecine in Paris before entering Westminster Hospital. In 1852, he migrated to Victoria as surgeon on the ''Oriental'' and, after briefly mining gold, established a popular, unconventional medical practice in Melbourne.
