Electoral District Of Ipswich
Ipswich is a Legislative Assembly of Queensland electoral district on the Brisbane River, west of Brisbane in the Australian state of Queensland. The electorate includes Ipswich and its suburbs, south and east of the Bremer River, west of Bundamba Creek and north of the Cunningham Highway. History The electoral district of Town of Ipswich was one of the original 16 established in 1859, when Queensland became a separate colony. It returned 3 members. In the redistribution of 1872, its name was shortened to just "Ipswich" and it became a single member constituency, due to the creation of the electoral district of Bundamba. In the redistribution of 1878, it absorbed the electoral district of Bremer and became a dual-member constituency. In 1912, it again reverted to a single member constituency, due to the re-introduction of the single-member electoral district of Bremer. Jennifer Howard (Australian Politician)
Jennifer Ruth Howard (born 12 July 1965) is an Australian politician. She has been the Labor member for Ipswich in the Queensland Legislative Assembly since 2015. Jennifer has been active in community groups such as Zonta International, school P&Cs, sporting club committees, and other community groups. In 2005, Jennifer played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Ipswich Women's Development Network, a not-for-profit organisation that helps empower women in Ipswich. Political career 2015 State Election Howard defeated Ian Berry at the 2015 Queensland state election by a margin of 65.9% to 34.1%, achieving a two party preferred swing of 20.09%. 2017 State Election The main contenders for the seat of Ipswich at the 2017 Queensland state election were Howard (as the incumbent) and the recently dismissed One Nation Senator Malcolm Roberts. Frederick Augustus Forbes
Frederick Augustus Forbes (30 September 1818 – 9 July 1878) was a politician in colonial Queensland and Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland. Early life Forbes was born on 30 September 1818 in Liverpool, Sydney, New South Wales, to Francis Ewen, a merchant, and his wife Mary Ann Taboweur. He attended William Cape's school and The King's School, Parramatta, before spending several years at sea. When his father died he took over his father's store in Liverpool in 1842 before marrying Margaret Milner in 1844. Politics Forbes soon moved to Ipswich where he opened another store and became involved in the Queensland Separation movement. Forbes became involved in politics and in 1860, along with Arthur Macalister and Patrick O'Sullivan, was elected to the new seat of Ipswich in the Queensland Legislative Assembly which he served until his defeat in 1863. Josiah Francis (7 March 1825 – 11 May 1891) was a miner and member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Francis was born at St Ann's Chapel, Cornwall, England, to father Joseph Youlten (1783–1832) and mother, Grace Nichols (1786–1852) was educated in St Ann's Chapel. John MacFarlane (Ipswich)
John MacFarlane (2 June 1829 – 7 March 1894) was a draper and member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography MacFarlane was born at Glasgow, Scotland, to father John Macfarlane his wife Agnes (née Housten). After receiving his education at parish schools in Glasgow he arrived in Queensland aboard the ''Helenslee'' in 1862 and became a store keeper with Cribb & Foote in Ipswich. He was then a draper at Greenham & Bennett before becoming a director with Woollen Co. from 1875 until 1894. He married Margaret McKenzie (died 1900) and had four sons and two daughters. Benjamin Cribb
Benjamin Cribb (7 November 1807 – 11 March 1874) was an Australian businessman and politician. He was an unaligned Member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for one term in 1858–1859 and a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly in 1861–1867 and again in 1870–1873. Early life Cribb was born in Poole, Dorset, England into a rigidly Nonconformist family. He was educated at his mother's Dame school. Cribb's father, John Galpin Cribb, was a mariner and ship owner, operating to Newfoundland and the Mediterranean; young Benjamin and his brother Robert sometimes accompanied their father. However, this ended when their father was killed in action during the Napoleonic Wars. Following his father's death, Cribb's mother Mary Cribb (née Dirham) apprenticed Benjamin and his brother Robert to two merchants. John Thompson (Australian Politician)
John Malbon Thompson (24 December 1830 – 30 May 1908) was an Australian lawyer and politician, member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life Thompson was the son of John Thompson, sometime Deputy Surveyor-General for New South Wales, by his marriage with the daughter of Charles Windeyer. He was born in Sydney and educated at William Timothy Cape's Grammar School. Career Thompson was admitted an attorney and solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales in 1855, and removing to Queensland, where he was admitted to the bar in June 1880, practised at Ipswich, Queensland, for which town he was returned to the Assembly in 1868. Whilst representing this constituency he was Chairman of Committees for two years, Secretary for Lands in the Arthur Palmer Ministry from May 1870 to July 1873, and Secretary for Public Works from the latter date till January 1874, when the Government retired. George McCullagh Reed
George McCullagh Reed (1831 – 13 November 1898) was a New Zealand presbyterian minister, journalist and newspaper proprietor. Reed was born in County Monaghan, Ireland in about 1831. He received his education from Queen's College, Belfast, from where he graduated in 1856. He was ordained as a Presbyterian minister and went to France, Switzerland, and in 1857 to Victoria in Australia. From 1861, he was minister in Ipswich, Queensland, and it was there that he married Jessie Chalmers Ranken on 6 July 1863. He resigned from the ministry in 1866. Reed was elected to the second Legislative Assembly of Queensland for the district of Ipswich in a ministerial by-election on 4 August 1866 and held this seat until the end of the parliamentary term on 19 June 1867. Henry Challinor
Henry Challinor (22 June 1814 – 9 September 1882) was a physician and politician in the Colony of Queensland. Early life Challinor was born in London, England. Studying medicine in London, where he became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1842, he emigrated to Queensland in 1849 aboard the , on which he served as the ship's doctor. By April 1849, he had established a medical practice in Ipswich, where he later spent much of his life. Church life Dr Challinor was a founding deacon of the Central Congregational Church of Ipswich, appointed 25 April 1853.
