John MacFarlane (Ipswich)
John MacFarlane (2 June 1829 – 7 March 1894) was a draper and member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography MacFarlane was born at Glasgow, Scotland, to father John Macfarlane his wife Agnes (née Housten). After receiving his education at parish schools in Glasgow he arrived in Queensland aboard the ''Helenslee'' in 1862 and became a store keeper with Cribb & Foote in Ipswich. He was then a draper at Greenham & Bennett before becoming a director with Woollen Co. from 1875 until 1894. He married Margaret McKenzie (died 1900) and had four sons and two daughters. Electoral District Of Ipswich
Ipswich is a Legislative Assembly of Queensland electoral district on the Brisbane River, west of Brisbane in the Australian state of Queensland. The electorate includes Ipswich and its suburbs, south and east of the Bremer River, west of Bundamba Creek and north of the Cunningham Highway. History The electoral district of Town of Ipswich was one of the original 16 established in 1859, when Queensland became a separate colony. It returned 3 members. In the redistribution of 1872, its name was shortened to just "Ipswich" and it became a single member constituency, due to the creation of the electoral district of Bundamba. In the redistribution of 1878, it absorbed the electoral district of Bremer and became a dual-member constituency. In 1912, it again reverted to a single member constituency, due to the re-introduction of the single-member electoral district of Bremer. Draper
Draper was originally a term for a retailer or wholesaler of cloth that was mainly for clothing. A draper may additionally operate as a cloth merchant or a haberdasher. History Drapers were an important trade guild during the medieval period, when the sellers of cloth operated out of drapers' shops. The temperance movement is a social movement promoting temperance or complete abstinence from consumption of alcoholic beverages. Queensland Legislative Assembly
The Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the sole chamber of the unicameral Parliament of Queensland established under the Constitution of Queensland. Elections are held every four years and are done by full preferential voting. The Assembly has 93 members, who have used the letters MP after their names since 2000 (previously they were styled MLAs). There is approximately the same population in each electorate; however, that has not always been the case (in particular, a malapportionment system - not, strictly speaking, a gerrymander - dubbed the ''Bjelkemander'' was in effect during the 1970s and 1980s).
