El Imam El Mahdi University
University of El Imam El Mahdi is a public Sudanese university based in the town of Kosti, Sudan. The university was founded in 1994 as a public university funded by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. It is named in honor of Muhammad Ahmad al-Mahdi, the leader of the Mahdist revolution which overthrew the Ottoman-Egyptian administration and established their own "Islamic and national" government in Sudan (1885-1898). Since its establishment, the university has striven to realize its goals in providing academic environment conducive to excellent teaching, learning, and research. In line with policy of the Sudanese Ministry of Higher Education , it endeavors to contribute to social, cultural and economic development of the local community and the whole country through the development and implementation of relevant curricula and academic programmes. Kosti, Sudan
Kosti (also Kusti, ar, كوستي) is one of the major cities (population was 173,599) in Sudan that lies south of Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, and stands on the western bank of the White Nile river opposite Rabak(the capital of the White Nile state)where there is a bridge. The city is served by Kosti Railway Station and Rabak Airport. History Kosti was founded shortly after 1899 by the Greek merchant Konstantinos “Kostas” Mourikis, who arrived in Sudan along with his brother following the Anglo-Egyptian victory over the indigenous Mahdist state. He set up a store on the White Nile, where pilgrims from West Africa to Mecca and Southern trade routes crossed. The settlement soon grew to a town and was named after "Kostas", illustrating the important role played by the Greeks in Sudan, especially in the field of trade. Aba Island
Aba Island is an island on the White Nile to the south of Khartoum, Sudan. It is the original home of the Mahdi in Sudan and the spiritual base of the Umma Party. History Aba Island was the birthplace of the Mahdiyya, first declared on June 29, 1881 as a religious movement by Muhammad Ahmad, the self-proclaimed Mahdi. The island was the site of the first battle of the Mahdist War on August 12, 1881. In the early 1920s, between 5,000 and 15,000 pilgrims were coming to Aba Island each year to celebrate Ramadan. Many of them identified 'Abd al-Rahman with the prophet Jesus, and assumed that he would drive the Christian colonists out of Sudan. The British found that the Abd al-Rahman al-Mahdi was in correspondence with agents and leaders in Nigeria and Cameroon, predicting the eventual victory of the Mahdists over the Christians. Rabak
Rabak (ربك) is a city in south-eastern Sudan and the capital of the Sudanese state of White Nile. It is one of the major cities of Sudan, an industrial city in which are located several factories, such as the Nile Cement Company factory, the Kenana sugar factory, and the Assalaya sugar factory. Geography The city is located on the eastern bank of the White Nile, facing Kosti on the western bank. It lies some 362 meters above sea level. Rabak is approximately south of Khartoum and west of the Ethiopian border.
