El Hachemi Guerouabi
El-Hadj El Hachmi Guerouabi (Arabic: الهاشمي القروابي; January 6, 1938 in Boudouaou, Algeria – July 17, 2006 in Zeralda, Algeria) was an Algerian singer and composer of Chaâbi and one of the Grand Masters of the Algiers-based Chaâbi musical style. He was born in El Mouradia (Algiers) and grew up in Bélouizdad. Two passions occupied Guerouabi's childhood: football and music. Being a good footballer he played with La Redoute AC football club until 1952. By then he had developed a special interest to music; in particular the music of El Hadj M'Hamed El Anka, Hadj M'rizek and Hssissen Hsissen (December 8, 1929 – September 29, 1958) was an Algerian singer. Algiers ( ; ar, الجزائر, al-Jazāʾir; ber, Dzayer, script=Latn; french: Alger, ) is the capital and largest city of Algeria. Hsissen (December 8, 1929 – September 29, 1958) was an Algerian singer. Biography Hsissen was born at 15 rue Monthabor in the Casbah of Algiers to a modest family, originally from Maâtkas (Tizi Ouzou Province). From a very young age, he was interested in the ''chanson'' style and the works of composer El Hadj M'Hamed El Anka. He also respected and admired the work of Khelifa Belkacem. At the age of 23, he formed an orchestra. Hsissen combined his love of music with activism with the Movement for the Triumph of Democratic Liberties and the National Liberation Front. Hsissen died in Tunis on September 29, 1958, after a long bout of lung disease. His remains were re-interred in his homeland on September 29, 2012, in the commemoration of the 54th year of his death. This coincided with the fiftieth anniversary of the independence of Algeria. El Hadj M'Hamed El Anka ( ar, الحاج محمد العنقة}), (May 20, 1907 in Algiers – November 23, 1978 in Algiers) also known as Hadj Muhammed Al Anka, El-Hadj M'Hamed El Anka (and various other combinations), was considered a Grand Master of Andalusian classical music and Algerian chaâbi music. Early life He was born on May 20, 1907, under the name Ait Ouarab Mohamed Idir Halo, on 4 Rue Tombouctou in the Casbah of Algiers. His family, Ait Ouarab, were originally from Taguersift near to Freha in Greater Kabylia; his father was Mohamed Ben Hadj Saîd, and his mother was Fatma Bent Boudjemaâ. His father was taken ill on the day of his birth, and had to be replaced by a maternal uncle for registering the birth, which caused an error recording his name. His uncle presented himself as such to the registry employee, by saying "Ana Khalou" ("I am his uncle" in Arabic), and the employee wrote "Halo". So he became Halo Mohamed Idir from then on. Mandole
The Algerian mandole (mandol, mondol) is a steel-string fretted instrument resembling an elongated mandolin, widely used in Algerian music such as Chaabi, Kabyle music and Nuubaat (Andalusian classical music). The name can cause confusion, as "mandole" is a French word for mandola, the instrument from which the Algerian mandole developed. The Algerian mandole is not however a mandola, but a mandocello sized instrument. The instrument has also been called a "mandoluth" when describing the instrument played by the Algerian-French musician, Hakim Hamadouche. Mohamed Belouizdad
Mohamed Belouizdad ( ar, محمد بلوزداد; 3 November 1924, in Algiers – 14 January 1952, in Paris), was an Algerian militant and chief "responsible" (manager) of Special Organisation (OS), the military branch of the Algerian People's Party, (in French, Parti du Peuple Algerien) (PPA). Originating from Guenzet, a town and commune in Sétif Province in north-eastern Algeria, he was born in Belcourt, a quarter of Algiers to a family of five brothers and two sisters. Among his siblings was Dr. Mustapha Belouizdad, and Othmane Belouizdad, a member of CRUA and Sahnoun Belouizdad, a militant who died in prison of El Harrach succumbing to torture.
