Edward C. Doyle
Edward Charles Doyle (October 12, 1882 – January 2, 1972) was a Canadian politician. He represented the electoral district of Richmond and Cape Breton West in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1928 to 1930. He was a member of the Nova Scotia Liberal Party. Born in 1882 at Poulamon, Richmond County, Nova Scotia, Doyle was a carpenter and building contractor by career. He was educated at St. Francis Xavier University, and the Maritime Business College. He married Florence Alice Boutin, and then Evangeline Ganong. Doyle entered provincial politics in 1928, when he was elected in the dual-member Richmond and Cape Breton West riding with Liberal Alonzo Martell. Doyle resigned his seat to run in the 1930 federal election. Poulamon
Poulamon is a community in Isle Madame, in the province of Nova Scotia, located in Richmond County. On the Western side of Poulamon is Martinique and on the Eastern side is D'Escousse Poulamon or "Poulamond" translated from French means tomcod, also commonly known as frostfish in reference to the Microgadus tomcod that was once swam abundant around Isle Madame. Poulamon, like the rest of Isle Madame has many historic (status and non-status) building stock including the Former "Beaton's General Store" which once served as the location for a blacksmith shop, barber shop and fish processing facility among other businesses. In the 1800s and early 1900s Poulamon had a strong agricultural base with cattle and sheep grazing occurring on Eagle Island and Crow Island brought there by boat from Poulamon. The 1930 Canadian federal election was held on July 28, 1930, to elect members of the House of Commons of the 17th Parliament of Canada. Richard Bedford Bennett's Conservative Party won a majority government, defeating the Liberal Party led by Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King. Background The first signs of the Great Depression were clearly evident by the 1930 election, and Conservative party leader Richard Bennett campaigned on a platform of aggressive measures in order to combat it. Richmond County is an historical county and census division of Nova Scotia, Canada. Local government is provided by the Municipality of the County of Richmond. History Named in honour of Charles Lennox, 4th Duke of Richmond, who was Governor General of British North America 1818-1819, Richmond County was created in 1835. John Alexander Macdonald (Nova Scotia Politician)
John Alexander Macdonald (January 3, 1883 – June 11, 1945) was a physician and political figure in Nova Scotia, Canada. He represented Richmond—West Cape Breton in the House of Commons of Canada from 1925 to 1930 as a Conservative member. He sat for Richmond—West Cape Breton division as a member of the Senate of Canada from 1932 to 1945. He was born in Havre Boucher, Nova Scotia, the son of Hugh Macdonald, and was educated at Saint Francis Xavier University and Dalhousie University. In 1912, Macdonald married Margaret Lola Maxwell. He represented Richmond County in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1916 to 1925, when he resigned to run for a federal seat. Macdonald resigned his seat in the Commons in 1930 to allow Edgar Nelson Rhodes to be elected there. Richmond—West Cape Breton was a federal electoral district in the province of Nova Scotia, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1925 to 1935. This riding was created in 1924 from Cape Breton South and Richmond riding. Alonzo Archibald Martell (October 20, 1881 – September 13, 1942) was a real estate agent, insurance broker, notary public and political figure in Nova Scotia, Canada. He represented Richmond-West Cape Breton in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1928 to 1933 as a Liberal member. He was born in Main-à-Dieu, Cape Breton Island, the son of Charles A. Martell and Margaret Firby Roberts. In 1919, he married Katherine Weir. Martell was mayor of Louisbourg from 1920 to 1926. He served as deputy clerk for the provincial legislature from 1934 to 1942.
