Education in Cuba has been a highly ranked system for many years. The University of Havana was founded in 1727 and there are a number of other well-established List of universities in Cuba, colleges and universities. Following the 1959 revolution, the Castro government nationalized all educational institutions, and created a government operated system. Cuban Peso
The Cuban peso (in Spanish , ISO 4217 code: CUP) also known as , is the official currency of Cuba. The Cuban peso historically circulated at par with the Spanish-American silver dollar from the 16th to 19th centuries, and then at par with the U.S. dollar from 1881 to 1959. The Castro government then introduced the socialist planned economy and pegged the peso to the Soviet ruble. The Soviet Union's collapse in 1991 resulted in a Special Period of difficult economic adjustments for Cuba. United States Embargo Against Cuba
The United States embargo against Cuba prevents American businesses, and businesses organized under U.S. law or majority-owned by American citizens, from conducting trade with Cuban interests. It is the most enduring trade embargo in modern history. The US first imposed an embargo on the sale of arms to Cuba on March 14, 1958, during the Fulgencio Batista regime. Again on October 19, 1960, almost two years after the Cuban Revolution had led to the deposition of the Batista regime, the US placed an embargo on exports to Cuba except for food and medicine after Cuba nationalized the US-owned Cuban oil refineries without compensation.
