Eduard Hellendoorn
Eduard Carel Frederik Hellendoorn (29 November 1912 – 13 March 1941) was a painter and Dutch resistance fighter. Biography Hellendoorn was born on 29 November 1912 in Amsterdam. He studied the ''Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten (Den Haag)'' (Royal Academy of Art, The Hague). In 1931 Hellendoorn married Johanna Maria Drayton Lee with whom he had three children. The couple divorced in 1939. Hellendoorn's work was included in the 1939 exhibition and sale '' Onze Kunst van Heden'' (Our Art of Today) at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. In 1940 Hellendoorn joined the communist artists' resistance. In 1941 he took part in the ''Februaristaking'' February strike, a protest against the persecution of Dutch Jews. Waalsdorpervlakte
The Waalsdorpervlakte () is an open place in the dune area "Meijendel" (The Hague, Netherlands), where between 250 and 280 members of the Dutch resistance were killed by the Germans during World War II. After the liberation of the Netherlands, Nazi collaborators were executed at the site. Anton Mussert, the leader of National Socialist Movement in the Netherlands, was executed here on 7 May 1946. Onze Kunst Van Heden
Onze Kunst van Heden (Contemporary Artists/Our Art of Today) was an exhibition held in the winter of 1939 through 1940 at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Due to the threat of invasion in the years leading up to World War II, the Netherlands' government stored many items from the Rijksmuseum's permanent collection. The resulting empty gallery space was utilized by contemporary Dutch artists to exhibit and sell their art. It was organized by the director of the Rijksmuseum . The show was open to all artists, with each artist allowed to enter four pieces. 902 artists exhibited 3,200 works of art in 74 rooms and cabinets of the Rijksmuseum. Rijksmuseum
The Rijksmuseum () is the national museum of the Netherlands dedicated to Dutch arts and history and is located in Amsterdam. The museum is located at the Museum Square in the borough of Amsterdam South, close to the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, and the Concertgebouw. February Strike
The February strike ( nl, Februaristaking) was a general strike in the German-occupied Netherlands in 1941, during World War II, organised by the then-outlawed Communist Party of the Netherlands in defence of persecuted Dutch Jews and against the anti-Jewish measures and activities of the Nazis in general. The direct causes were a series of arrests and pogroms held by the Germans in the Jewish neighbourhood of Amsterdam, the Jodenbuurt. It started on 25 February 1941 and lasted for two days; on 26 February, 300,000 Amsterdam people joined the strike. The strike was harshly suppressed by the Germans after three days. The 1941 February Strike is considered to be the first public protest against the Nazis in occupied Europe, and the only mass protest against the deportation of Jews to be organized by non-Jews. Scheveningen
Scheveningen is one of the eight districts of The Hague, Netherlands, as well as a subdistrict (''wijk'') of that city.
