Edmonton International Street Performer's Festival
The Edmonton International Street Performers Festival (sometimes known as StreetFest) is an annual, 10-day performance festival that takes place in mid-July at Sir Winston Churchill Square, in the city of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The festival was founded in 1985 by Sheldon Wilner and Dick Finkel with the intention of bringing the art of street performance to Edmonton’s downtown region. Every year, the festival brings in performers from around the world, and gives an opportunity for local performers to showcase their talent. In 2014, the festival featured roughly 1500 performances, and was attended by 250,000 people. Over the years, StreetFest has hosted a wide variety of performers, such as famous high-wire artist Philippe Petit, Phillip Petite, Cirque du Soleil clown Michael Hancock, and a variety of other clowns, acrobats, jugglers and magicians. Street Performance
Street performance or busking is the act of performing in public places for gratuities. In many countries, the rewards are generally in the form of money but other gratuities such as food, drink or gifts may be given. Street performance is practiced all over the world and dates back to antiquity. People engaging in this practice are called street performers or buskers in the United Kingdom. Outside of New York, ''buskers'' is not a term generally used in American English. Alberta

Sir Winston Churchill Square
Churchill Square (officially "Sir Winston Churchill Square") is the main downtown square in Edmonton, Alberta, which plays host to a large number of festivals and events including: the Edmonton International Street Performers Festival, Edmonton Fashion Week, The Works Art & Design Festival, Taste of Edmonton, Cariwest, and Edmonton Pride. Philippe Petit
Philippe Petit (; born 13 August 1949) is a French high-wire artist who gained fame for his unauthorized high-wire walks between the towers of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris in 1971 and of Sydney Harbour Bridge in 1973, as well as between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City on the morning of 7 August 1974. For his unauthorized feat above the ground – which he referred to as "le coup" – he rigged a cable and used a custom-made long, balancing pole. He performed for 45 minutes, making eight passes along the wire. Since then, Petit has lived in New York, where he has been artist-in-residence at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, also a location of other aerial performances.
