''Ech-Chaab'' (in Arabic الشعب meaning ''The people'') is a daily newspaper in Algeria published six days a week in the tabloid format. It is one of the most widely read newspapers in Algeria. History and profile Ech-Chaab is an Algerian general daily newspaper appearing in Arabic which was founded on December 11, 1962, a few months after the Algerian independence. This journalistic title is currently one of the six dailies of the Algerian public press. Othmane Senadjki
Othmane Senadjki ( ar, عثمان سناجقي) (born in Khemis El Khechna on 23 May 1959 and died in Béni Messous on 29 December 2010) was an Algerian journalist and editor-in-chief of El Khabar newspaper. Early life Senadjki was born in 1959 in the town of Khemis El Khechna in the lower Kabylia region of Algeria, west of the Khachna Massif and south-west of the town of Boumerdès. After primary and intermediate studies in Khemis El Khechna, Senadjki continued his secondary studies at Lycée Ibn Tumart in the town of Boufarik where he obtained his baccalaureate in 1978, and then pursued studies in political science and international relations at the University of Algiers where he obtained his bachelor's degree in 1982. A tabloid is a newspaper with a compact page size smaller than broadsheet. There is no standard size for this newspaper format. Etymology The word ''tabloid'' comes from the name given by the London-based pharmaceutical company Burroughs Wellcome & Co. to the compressed tablets they marketed as "Tabloid" pills in the late 1880s. The connotation of ''tabloid'' was soon applied to other small compressed items. A 1902 item in London's ''Westminster Gazette'' noted, "The proprietor intends to give in tabloid form all the news printed by other journals." An independence referendum was held in French Algeria on 1 July 1962. It followed French approval of the Évian Accords in an April referendum. Voters were asked whether Algeria should become an independent state, co-operating with France; 99.72% voted in favour with a voter turnout of 91.88%.
