Eastleigh Athletic F.C.
Eastleigh Athletic were a long-running works football club, based in Eastleigh, Hampshire. They were one of the early pioneers of football in the area and were the main team in the town until the loss of their ground and the emergence of other local sides. History The Eastleigh Railway Depot was opened by the London & South Western Railway Company in 1891 and shortly afterwards workers formed a football team, initially known as Eastleigh LSWR. The company owned their own sports ground at Dutton Lane in the town, which over the years was developed with an oval cycling track and grandstand for spectators. In 1896 the club adopted their best known identity of Eastleigh Athletic and were one of the eight founder members of the Hampshire League. On 5 September 1896 they took part in an historic match against Freemantle - the first ever game of the new competition. Eastleigh
Eastleigh is a town in Hampshire, England, between Southampton and Winchester. It is the largest town and the administrative seat of the Borough of Eastleigh, with a population of 24,011 at the 2011 census. The town lies on the River Itchen, one of England's premier chalk streams for fly fishing, and a designated site of Special Scientific Interest. The area was originally villages until the 19th century, when Eastleigh was developed as a railway town by the London and South-Western Railway. Bert Paddington
Albert Hillman Paddington (30 June 1881 – 3 April 1932) was an English professional footballer who played as a half-back for Southampton and Brighton & Hove Albion in the 1900s. During his career he was always known as "Paddy". Football career Paddington was born at Bishopstoke, Hampshire and played for various local clubs, while working as a painter for London and South Western Railway at the Eastleigh Railway Works. He joined Southampton of the Southern League as an amateur in September 1900, aged 19, before turning professional the following May. He was one of the few local players who made the grade at this time in a side containing several England internationals and Scottish imports. At the "Saints", Paddington spent most of his career in the reserves, where he was appointed captain soon after joining the club. The 1956–57 season was the 77th season of competitive football in England. Manchester United won the First Division to become English football champions for the fifth time. Tottenham Hotspur were runners-up. In the Second Division it was Leicester City who finished in top spot, ahead of East Midlands rivals, Nottingham Forest. Hartlepools United finished as runners-up to Derby County in Third Division North, while in the Third Division South, Ipswich Town won the title ahead of Torquay United.
