East-Central Kansas
East-Central Kansas is a region of Kansas. It is located between the Kansas City metropolitan area and Southeast Kansas, and on the border with Missouri. The region extends westward towards the Flint Hills to Lyon County. East-Central Kansas geographically features rolling hills and deep forested river valleys. The main crop of this predominantly agricultural region is corn. The area is more forested and more moist compared to the rest of the state. East-Central Kansas is rich with state history, as many locations of this region saw battles in Bleeding Kansas, and the infamous abolitionist John Brown and his men battled in Osawatomie. Much of the area is powered by Wolf Creek Nuclear Generating Station which is located near Burlington. The most populous cities of the region include Emporia, Ottawa, Paola, Osawatomie, Garnett, Osage City, Burlington, and Louisburg. Kansas
Kansas () is a state in the Midwestern United States. Its capital is Topeka, and its largest city is Wichita. Kansas is a landlocked state bordered by Nebraska to the north; Missouri to the east; Oklahoma to the south; and Colorado to the west. Ottawa, Kansas
Ottawa (pronounced ) is a city in, and the county seat of, Franklin County, Kansas, United States. It is located on both banks of the Marais des Cygnes River near the center of Franklin County. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 12,625. It is the home of Ottawa University. Miami County, Kansas
Miami County (county code MI) is a county located in east-central Kansas and is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. As of the 2020 census, the county population was 34,191. Its county seat and most populous city is Paola. History Native Americans The first settlements of the area were by Native American Indian tribes, primarily in the 1820s through the 1840s. This was due to their removal from areas east (Ohio, Illinois and Indiana)and the designation of the area as part of the Indian Territory. The tribes included were the Miami and Shawnee, and the Pottawatomie, Piankeshaw, Kaskaskia, Wea and Peoria, which comprised the Confederated Tribes. Louisburg is a city in Miami County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 United States census, 2020 census, the population of the city was 4,969. History 19th century Prior to the American Civil War, the land of what is now called Louisburg was part of an area reserved for members of various tribes of Native Americans in the United States, Native Americans who were ceding their lands in Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana. Osage City is a city in Osage County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 2,861. History Osage City was surveyed and platted in late 1869, after the route of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway had been fixed, but before it had been built to the city.
