Earthquakes In Iran
Iran is one of the most seismically active countries in the world, being crossed by several major faults that cover at least 90% of the country. As a result, earthquakes in Iran occur often and are destructive. Geology and history The Iranian plateau is subject to most types of tectonic activity, including active folding, faulting and volcanic eruptions. It is well known for its long history of disastrous earthquake activity. Not only have these earthquakes killed thousands, but they have also led to waste of valuable natural resources. Since 1900, at least 126,000 fatalities have resulted from earthquakes in Iran. In addition, the Iranian Plate is bordered by the Indian Plate (to the southeast), the Eurasian Plate (to the north), and the Arabian Plate (to the south and west), which is where the Zagros fold and thrust belt (an ancient subduction zone) lies. Kermanshah ( fa, کرمانشاه, Kermânšâh ), also known as Kermashan (; romanized: Kirmaşan), is the capital of Kermanshah Province, located from Tehran in the western part of Iran. 2018 Sarpol-e Zahab Earthquake
2018 Sarpol-e Zahab earthquake (زمینلرزه ۱۳۹۷ سرپل ذهاب) with magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck western Iran near its border with Iraq at 20:07 local time (19:37 local time in Iraq) on Sunday night, 25 November 2018 injuring over 700 people and sending fearful residents running into the street. One fatality and 45 injuries were also reported in the neighbouring Iraq. According to CNN, some houses were destroyed in several rural areas of Qasr-e-Shirin and SarPol-e zahab. As soon as the quake stopped, several rescue teams were quickly dispatched, the authorities said. The tremor was also felt in the Iraqi capital Baghdad and in Kuwait. It was also experienced in Erbil, in the region of Kurdistan, according to Al Jazeera. Khuzestan Province
Khuzestan Province (also spelled Xuzestan; fa, استان خوزستان ''Ostān-e Xūzestān'') is one of the 31 provinces of Iran. It is in the southwest of the country, bordering Iraq and the Persian Gulf. Its capital is Ahvaz and it covers an area of . Since 2014, it has been part of Iran's Region 4. Historically, one of the most important regions of the Ancient Near East, Khuzestan is what historians refer to as ancient Elam, whose capital was in Susa. The Achaemenid Old Persian term for Elam was ''Hujiyā'' when they conquered it from the Elamites, which is present in the modern name. 2019 East Azerbaijan Earthquake
The 2019 East Azerbaijan earthquake occurred at 03:17 local-time on November 8, 2019. This earthquake had a moment magnitude of 5.9 and had a shallow depth of 20 km. Tectonic setting Iran lies within the complex zone of continental collision between the Arabian Plate and the Eurasian Plate, which extends from the Bitlis- Zagros belt in the south to the Greater Caucasus mountains, the Absheron-Balkan Sill and the Kopet Dag mountains in the north. The collision between these plates deforms an area of ~ 3,000,000 km2 of continental crust. It is one of the largest convergent deformation regions on Earth. 2020 Iran–Turkey Earthquakes
The first and most destructive of the 2020 Iran–Turkey earthquakes occurred on 23 February, near Khoy in north-west Iran, close to the border with Turkey, killing 9 people in Başkale, Van Province, Van. It hit at 9:23 a.m. local time (05:53 Coordinated Universal Time, UTC) with a magnitude of 5.8 at a depth of 6 kilometres (3.7 miles) and the epicenter was Qotur district, according to the Iranian Seismological Center (IRSC). 2021 Hormozgan Earthquakes
The 2021 Hormozgan earthquakes was a doublet earthquake event in Iran that occurred on November 14, 2021 with magnitudes of 6.0 and 6.4 on the moment magnitude scale. The two quakes occurred just a minute and a half apart, killing 2 people and injuring a further 100. Tectonic setting Bandar Abbas lies at the southern margin of the collision zone between the Eurasian Plate and the Arabian Plate. This collision has created the well known Zagros Mountains and the Iranian Plateau.
