Extraordinary Women
''Extraordinary Women: Women in Time, Women Without It'' ( es, Mujeres extraordinarias: Mujeres en el tiempo, mujeres sin tiempo); is a 2009 Dominican documentary feature by director Yildalina Tatem Brache, where she captures the lives of six influential women from the Dominican Republic. Production Yildalina Tatem Brache conceived the idea to make a project that illustrated the lives of women that have made substantial changes in Dominican history. In 2006 she started researching and picking 12 women, to write a book about them. When she approached the President of the Dominican Telecom Institute José Rafael Vargas, for financing, he suggested to change the idea of a book towards a film, so it would reach a wider audience. Yildalina accepted and started developing the project. Joaquín Balaguer
Joaquín Antonio Balaguer Ricardo (1 September 1906 – 14 July 2002) was a Dominican politician, scholar, writer, and lawyer. He was President of the Dominican Republic serving three non-consecutive terms for that office from 1960 to 1962, 1966 to 1978, and 1986 to 1996. His enigmatic, secretive personality was inherited from the Trujillo era, as well as his desire to perpetuate himself in power through dubious elections and state terrorism, and he was considered to be a ''caudillo''. His regime of terror claimed 11,000 victims who were either tortured or forcibly disappeared and killed. Nevertheless, Balaguer was also considered to be instrumental in the liberalization of the Dominican government, and his time as leader of the Dominican Republic saw major changes such as legalized political activities, surprise army promotions and demotions, promoting health and education improvements and instituting modest land reforms. Mirabal Sisters
The Mirabal sisters ( es, hermanas Mirabal ) were four sisters from the Dominican Republic, three of whom (Patria, Minerva and María Teresa) opposed the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo () and were involved in clandestine activities against his regime. The three sisters were assassinated on 25 November 1960. The last sister, Adela "Dedé", who was not involved in political activities at the time, died of natural causes on 1 February 2014. The assassinations turned the Mirabal sisters into "symbols of both popular and feminist resistance". Dominican Revolutionary Party
The Dominican Revolutionary Party ( es, link=no, Partido Revolucionario Dominicano, PRD) is a political party in the Dominican Republic. Traditionally a left-of-centre party and social democratic in nature, the party has shifted since the 2000s toward the political centre. The party's distinctive color is white. Salcedo, Hermanas Mirabal
Salcedo is the capital city of the Hermanas Mirabal Province in the Dominican Republic. It is the birthplace of the Dominican heroines, the Mirabal sisters, who died in the struggle against the dictator Rafael Trujillo. A museum in the town commemorates three of sisters; it was tended to by the remaining sister, Bélgica (Dedé) Mirabal, until her death on February 1, 2014. The city is named after Francisco Antonio Salcedo who fought in the northwestern part of the country against the Haitian army during the Dominican-Haitian War after the Dominican independence from Haiti in 1844. Eduardo Brito (January 22, 1906 – January 5, 1946) was a Dominican Republic, Dominican Baritone singer. He was world-renowned for his voice and took to the stage in many countries performing operas and zarzuelas. The main hall of the Teatro Nacional (Santo Domingo), Dominican National Theater is named after Brito. 2009 Documentary Films
