Evgeny Alekseev (basketball)
Evgeny Nikolaevich Alekseev (russian: Евге́ний Никола́евич Алексе́ев ; 22 March 1919 – February 28, 2005) was a Soviet and Russian professional basketball player and coach. Club playing career Alekseev played club basketball with the Soviet clubs Lokomotiv Moscow, CSKA Moscow, where he was the team's captain, and VVS Moscow. He won three USSR League championships, in the years 1939, 1945, and 1952. National team playing career Alekseev was the captain of the senior Soviet Union national basketball team. He played with the USSR at the EuroBasket 1947, where he won a gold medal, and averaged 10.2 points per game. He was subsequently named an Honored Master of Sports of the USSR. Coaching career After his basketball playing career ended, Alekseev began working as a basketball coach, in 1953. The 1947 FIBA European Championship, commonly called FIBA EuroBasket 1947, was the fifth FIBA EuroBasket regional basketball championship, held by FIBA. Fourteen national teams affiliated with the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) took part in the competition. Czechoslovakia hosted the contest, which was held in Prague. Basketball at the 1960 Summer Olympics was the fifth appearance of the sport of basketball as an official Olympic medal event. 16 nations were admitted into the Olympic tournament, with many others being eliminated in a pre-Olympic tournament held earlier in the year from 13 to 20 August 1960 at the Land Rover Arena at Bologna. 64 games of basketball were played in the Olympic tournament that was held at the Palazzetto dello Sport and PalaLottomatica, both in Rome. The 16 teams were split up into four groups for the preliminary round. Each team played every other team in its group once. The top two teams in each group advanced to the semifinals in two pools of four, while the lower two teams were sent to a consolation semifinal for 9th through 16th place.
