Sleidinge
Sleidinge is a village in the municipalities of Evergem in the province of East Flanders, Belgium. It is located about north-west of Ghent. History Sleidinge was originally located in a large heath and forest area. The village was first mentioned in 1220 as Scleidingha. The etymology is unclear. In 1248, the area was cut in two. The eastern part belonged to the Abbey of St. Bavo in Ghent. The western became the possession of the Count of Flanders. The parish used to belong to the Diocese of Tournai until 1559 when it was transferred to the Diocese of Ghent. The French Revolution resulted in the reunification of both parts into a single municipality. In 1861, the Sleidinge railway station opened on the railway line from Ghent to Bruges. Doornzele
Doornzele is a village in the municipality of Evergem in the province of East Flanders, Belgium. The village is notable for its ' (village square) which is one of the largest in Belgium and in near original condition. Doornzele is located on the Ghent–Terneuzen Canal about north of Ghent. History Doornzele is known for its ' (village square) which was first attested in 966. The settlement itself was first mentioned in 1337. The ''dries'' measures and is long. The church is located in the centre and the village has been built around the square. An abbey of the Benedictine Sisters has been known to exist in Doornzele since 1234. Shortly after, it was joined by Aurea Cella, an abbey of Cistercian nuns. In 1578, the abbeys were destroyed by Calvinists from Ghent. Doornzele was burnt in 1691 by French troops. Kluizen
Kluizen is a village in the municipalities of Evergem and Ghent in the province of East Flanders, Belgium. Large parts of the original municipality have become part of the Port of Ghent. History The area around Kluizen used to be a wilderness of heath and sand grounds. Between 1115 and 1119, the land was donated to the Ename Abbey by Baldwin VII, Count of Flanders for cultivation and the construction of church. Kluizen became a parish before 1179. The village was first mentioned in 1270, and means hermitages. The area was cultivated by the late 13th century. Kluizen frequently suffered from war and was nearly depopulated during the Eighty Year's War (1568–1648). World War I and II also caused severe damage to the village. Ertvelde
Ertvelde is a village of the Belgian municipality of Evergem. Eddy Wally used to have his legendary show venue in the village-centre, called "Paris, Las Vegas". Luc De Vos
Luc De Vos (12 July 1962 – 29 November 2014) was a Belgian musician and writer, best known as the lead singer of the Dutch-language alternative rock formation Gorki and as a guest in multiple television shows. He also voiced VW bus in the Flemish version of the Disney movie ''Cars''. He died of acute organ failure on the 29 November 2014 in his working apartment in Ghent.
