''Evangelienmotetten'' or Gospel motets (sometimes called ''Spruchmotetten'', "Bible-text motets") were settings to music of verses from the New Testament. They were selected as an essence or ''Kernspruch'' ("text-kernel") of the verses in question, with the intention of highlighting dramatically or summarising in a terse fashion a significant thought from the Gospels. There is a long tradition in Germany, dating back to the medieval era, of highlighting the importance of gospel readings through polyphonic musical settings of gospel texts. They became an increasingly popular genre from the 16th century onwards and were intended for use in Lutheran church services. They could thus be written in either Latin or German. The latter came to predominate by the end of the 16th century due to the emphasis placed by the Reformation on the need to make the Bible accessible to all people through the use of the vernacular language. ' (The temptation of Jesus) is a composition for a mixed choir a cappella by Gustav Gunsenheimer, written in 1968. It is an (Gospel motet), based on the gospel in German of the temptation of Christ, written for one of the Sundays of Lent. The text is the biblical passage from the Gospel of Matthew (), followed by the first stanza from the hymn "" written by Georg Weissel, in a setting of the original melody by Johann Stobäus. (Jesus and Nicodemus) is a sacred motet by Ernst Pepping, a setting of a passage from the Gospel of John. Pepping composed in 1937 an '' Evangelienmotette für vierstimmigen Chor a cappella'', a motet on gospel text for four-part choir a cappella. Topic The topic is the meeting of Jesus and Nicodemus at night (John 3, ). While some believe that Nicodemus, a member of the Sanhedrin who will later contribute to the funeral of Jesus, came to meet Jesus at night because he wanted not to be seen with him, others think that he wanted to concentrate in the silence of the night. Johann Wanning
Johann Wanning (also known as ''Johannes Wanningus, Wannigk, Wannicke'' or ''Wangnick'') (1537 – 23 October 1603) was a Dutch composer, kapellmeister and singer who worked for most of his career in the Prussian city of Danzig. He wrote a number of cycles of motets to be performed through the church year, as well as being the composer of the first known musical epithalamium. Life Little is known about his early years or education. He was born in Kampen in the then Habsburg Netherlands and went to the university at Königsberg in the Duchy of Prussia in 1560. Andreas Raselius
Andreas Raselius, also known as Andreas Rasel (c. 1563 – 6 January 1602) was a German composer and ''kapellmeister'' during the Renaissance. He worked for much of his career as a teacher and cantor in Regensburg, before being appointed as the court conductor of the Elector Palatine in Heidelberg. He is today best noted as the author of a cycle of motets for use throughout the year, the first such cycle to be composed in the German language, which was published in 1594. Early life and education Raselius was born at Hahnbach in the Upper Palatinate of Bavaria around 1563. He was the son of Thomas Raselius or Rasel, a Lutheran preacher. In Western classical music, a motet is mainly a vocal musical composition, of highly diverse form and style, from high medieval music to the present. The motet was one of the pre-eminent polyphonic forms of Renaissance music. Melchior Franck
Melchior Franck (c. 1579 – 1 June 1639) was a German composer of the late Renaissance and early Baroque eras. He was a hugely prolific composer of Protestant church music, especially motets, and assisted in bringing the stylistic innovations of the Venetian School north across the Alps into Germany. ''A cappella'' (, also , ; ) music is a performance by a singer or a singing group without instrumental accompaniment, or a piece intended to be performed in this way. The term ''a cappella'' was originally intended to differentiate between Renaissance polyphony and Baroque concertato musical styles. Gustav Gunsenheimer (born 10 March 1934) is a German director of church music and a composer of mostly sacred music and chamber music. First an elementary school teacher, he worked for decades as the church musician at St. Lukas in Schweinfurt, where he held annual festivals, conducted a notable choir, was responsible in the Bavarian organization of chorale conductors, and was a lecturer at the music university of Würzburg. Church Cantata (Bach)
Throughout his life as a musician, Johann Sebastian Bach composed cantatas for both secular and sacred use. His church cantatas are cantatas which he composed for use in the Lutheran church, mainly intended for the occasions of the liturgical year. Motets (Bach)
It is uncertain how many motets Johann Sebastian Bach composed, because some have been lost, and there are some doubtful attributions among the surviving ones associated with him. There is a case for regarding the six motets catalogued BWV 225–230 as being authenticated, although there is some doubt about one of them, ''Lobet den Herrn, alle Heiden''. A seventh motet, ''Ich lasse dich nicht'', BWV Anh. 159, which was formerly attributed to Bach's older cousin Johann Christoph Bach, appears to be at least partly by J.S. Bach, and if so was probably composed during his Weimar period. BWV 228 is another motet which appears to have been written at Weimar, between 1708 and 1717, the others having been composed in Leipzig. Several of the motets were written for funerals.
