Eva Collins
Eva Collins was an English snooker and billiards player. She was runner-up in the 1930 British Women's Billiards Championship, and in its successor tournament, the Women's Professional Billiards Championship in 1931. Early life and billiards career Eva Collins was the daughter of professional billiards player George Collins, who was the all-England billiards champion in 1877 and 1888. Her sister, Ella Collins, was also a pioneering women's billiards player. She started learning to play in July 1902, and a few months later, at the age of 12, was the subject of an article in the Portsmouth Evening News for beating a boy of 16 in a billiards match. In 1906, Collins played two series of billiards exhibition matches against "Madame Strebor," a pseudonym used by an unknown woman player who had toured with John Roberts Jr. The series held at Burroughes Hall finished 7–5 in favour of Madame Strebor. Margaret Lennan
Margaret Lennan was a Scottish snooker and billiards player. She was runner-up in the 1936 Women's Professional Billiards Championship. Biography Lennan started playing billiards at the age of 17, and received coaching from Alec Donaldson, father of future world snooker champion Walter Donaldson. She won a Ladies Billiards Championship in 1922. in 1928 she won an unofficial "British Isles Championship" by beating Joyce Gardner, and the following year became the first woman to qualify as a billiards coach. The Women's Billiards Association was formed in 1931, and Lennan was one of four professional players appointed to a committee to organise the professional championships, the others being Joyce Gardner, Ruth Harrison and Eva Collins. Women's Professional Snooker Championship
The Women's Professional Snooker Championship was a snooker tournament run from 1934 to 1950 by the Women's Billiards Association. The event was the world championship for female players during this time. Ruth Harrison was the most successful player, winning eight of the ten events. The event was later replaced by the World Women's Snooker Championship. History The tournament was held ten times from 1934 to 1950, with a break from 1941 to 1947. Only four different players reached the final during its existence, with Ruth Harrison winning eight of the ten events. The first tournaments were held at Burroughes Hall, London, and the tournaments after the break were held at Leicester Square Hall, London. The last time that the tournament was held, in 1950, Thelma Carpenter won, a few days after winning the World Women's Billiards Championship title. Ruth Harrison (snooker Player)
Ruth Harrison (10 May 1909 – 1991) was an English snooker and billiards player. She won the Women's Professional Snooker Championship each year from its inception in 1934 to 1940, and again when it was next held, in 1948. She also won the Women's Professional Billiards Championship three times. Biography Harrison was born on 10 May 1909 in Lintz and was a coalminer's daughter (as was her fellow leading player Agnes Morris) and learnt to play at the institute in her village in County Durham. She entered the 1931 World Ladies Billiards Championship, which was the first time she had played against women, and won the tournament. She turned professional straight afterwards. Joyce Gardner
Joyce Gardner (1910–1981) was an English professional English billiards player. She was the Women's Professional Billiards Champion from 1931 to 1933, and from 1935 to 1938. Early life Joyce Winifred Frances Gardner was born on 24 August 1910 in Gloucester. While living in Gloucester Joyce's parents ran the Glevum Billiard hall. But Joyce didn't take up billiards until the family moved to London where her father ran a billiards saloon in Holborn. Initially she took up millinery and dressmaking, but she discovered that she had a skill for potting balls whilst helping her father clear up the billiard tables. Career Margaret Lennan beat Joyce Gardner 1000–960 at Hull in September 1928 in a match billed as the British Championship. The Women's Billiards Association (WBA), founded in 1931 and based in London, United Kingdom, was the governing body for women's English billiards and snooker, and organised the Women's Professional Billiards Championship and Women's Professional Snooker Championship as well as amateur and junior competitions. The founding meeting was held on 13 May 1931 at the Women's Automobile and Sports Association. The meeting was chaired by Teresa Billington-Greig and appointed Viscountess Elibank as the first president and Mrs Longworth as the first chairman. The WBA ran amateur and professional billiards competitions starting from 1932, an amateur snooker tournament from 1933, and a professional snooker championship from 1934.
