Eugène Smits
Eugène Smits (22 May 1826, Antwerp - 4 December 1912, Brussels) was a Belgian portrait painter. Life and work He studied at the Académie royale des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles with François-Joseph Navez. From 1851 to 1852, he lived in Paris, where he made the professional acquaintance of Jean-François Millet, Eugène Isabey, and the brothers Joseph and Alfred Stevens. He returned to Paris in 1855, to take part in the Exposition Universelle. From 1861 to 1864, he lived in Italy, where he created his largest canvas: "Ein Sonntagsnachmittag in Pincio" (A Sunday Afternoon in Pincio, 1862). In 1868, he was one of the co-founders of the Société Libre des Beaux-Arts. In 1902, he was elected a member of his alma mater, the Académie royale. Pincio
The Pincian Hill (; it, Pincio ; la, Mons Pincius) is a hill in the northeast quadrant of the historical centre of Rome. The hill lies to the north of the Quirinal, overlooking the Campus Martius. It was outside the original boundaries of the ancient city of Rome, and was not one of the Seven hills of Rome, but it lies within the wall built by Roman Emperor Aurelian between 270 and 273. Villas and gardens Several important families in Ancient Rome had villas and gardens (''horti'') on the south-facing slopes in the late Roman Republic, including the Horti Lucullani (created by Lucullus), the Horti Sallustiani (created by the historian Sallust), the Horti Pompeiani, and the Horti Aciliorum. HathiTrust Digital Library is a large-scale collaborative repository of digital content from research libraries including content digitized via Google Books and the Internet Archive digitization initiatives, as well as content digitized locally by libraries. Société Libre Des Beaux-Arts
The Société Libre des Beaux-Arts ("Free Society of Fine Arts") was an organization formed in 1868 by Belgian artists to react against academicism and to advance Realist painting and artistic freedom. Based in Brussels, the society was active until 1876, by which time the aesthetic values it espoused had infiltrated the official Salon. It played a formative role in establishing avant-gardism in Belgium. History The first exhibition of the Free Society was held in 1868 to provide an alternative art space beyond the Salon. Three exhibitions were held in 1872. The society's manifesto was written by Camille van Camp and published 31 January, 1869. The Exposition Universelle of 1855 was an International Exhibition held on the Champs-Élysées in Paris from 15 May to 15 November 1855. Its full official title was the Exposition Universelle des produits de l'Agriculture, de l'Industrie et des Beaux-Arts de Paris 1855. Today the exposition's sole physical remnant is the Théâtre du Rond-Point des Champs-Élysées designed by architect Gabriel Davioud, which originally housed the Panorama National. Alfred Émile Léopold Stevens (11 May 182324 August 1906) was a Belgian painter, known for his paintings of elegant modern women. In their realistic style and careful finish, his works reveal the influence of 17th-century Dutch genre painting. After gaining attention early in his career with a social realist painting depicting the plight of poor vagrants, he achieved great critical and popular success with his scenes of upper-middle class Parisian life.
