Eugenio Quarti
Eugenio Quarti (1867-1929) is an Italian furniture maker called "the goldsmith of furniture makers". Biography Eugenio Quarti was born in Villa d'Almè, a small village in the province of Bergamo, from an artisan family of woodworkers. In 1881, at the age of 14 years old he goes to Paris, where he will learn new techniques and broaden his horizons. In 1886, he returned to Italy and settled in Milan where he worked, for a short period, with Carlo Bugatti and then open his own workshop in via Donizetti 3. His early works are strongly marked by Bugatti Moorish’s style, but already the exhibition of Turin of 1898 you can see the first signs of Art Nouveau and his personal style. A villa is a type of house that was originally an ancient Roman upper class country house. Since its origins in the Roman villa, the idea and function of a villa have evolved considerably. After the fall of the Roman Republic, villas became small farming compounds, which were increasingly fortified in Late Antiquity, sometimes transferred to the Church for reuse as a monastery. Then they gradually re-evolved through the Middle Ages into elegant upper-class country homes. Palazzo Castiglioni (Milan)
Palazzo Castiglioni is an Art Nouveau palace of Milan, northern Italy. It was designed by Giuseppe Sommaruga in the Liberty style and built between 1901 and 1903. The Rustication (architecture), rusticated blocks of the basement imitate a natural rocky shape, while the rest of the decorations are inspired by 18th century stuccos. The building is now used as the seat of the Unione Commercianti di Milano (Traders' Union of Milan). History The palace was built for entrepreneur Ermengildo Castiglioni, who chose architect Giuseppe Sommaruga because of his anticonventional solutions. The Order of Merit for Labour ( it, Ordine al Merito del Lavoro) is an Italian order of chivalry that was founded in 1923 by King Vittorio Emanuele III. It is awarded to those "who have been singularly meritorious" in agriculture, industry and commerce, crafts, lending and insurance. It is a continuation of the earlier ''Ordine al Merito Agrario, Industriale e Commerciale'' founded in 1901. Members of the order may use the title ''Cavaliere del lavoro''. The origins of the order lie with King Umberto I who, in 1898, instituted "a decoration for agricultural and industrial merit and a medal of honour." Pompeo Mariani (9 September 1857, Monza – 25 January 1927, Bordighera) was an Italian painter. Biography Mariani was born in Monza, Province of Milan. The nephew of the painter Mosè Bianchi, he abandoned a career in banking to devote himself entirely to painting. His apprenticeship began in 1879 under the guidance of the painter Eleuterio Pagliano, who introduced him to life studies. A trip to Egypt with Uberto Dell’Orto in 1881 provided subjects for the works shown at the Brera exhibitions of the next two years. He focused on landscape painting and began to specialise in seascapes in 1883, when he first stayed on the coast of Liguria. The first views of the Zelata area outside Pavia appeared in 1894. Bordighera
Bordighera (; lij, A Bordighea, locally ) is a town and ''comune'' in the Province of Imperia, Liguria (Italy). Geography Bordighera is located from the land border between Italy and France, and it is possible to see the French coast with a naked eye from the town. Having the "Capo Sant’Ampelio" which protrudes into the sea, it is the southernmost commune of the region. The cape is at around the same latitude as Pisa and features a little church built in the 11th century for Sant’Ampelio, the patron saint of the city. The Villa Mariani is located at 5 Via Fontana Vecchia in Bordighera on the Riviera in the province of Imperia, in northern Italy near the French border. History The Villa Pompeo Mariani was born as a cottage. In 1885 the countess Fanshawe had asked the architect Charles Garnier to build a residence for her on the hill of Bordighera. At first it was a one-story cottage with basement, whose main room was lit by a large window that still exists. Pompeo Mariani, a famous painter of the time and nephew of the famous Mosè Bianchi, bought the property in 1909 and asked the architects Luigi Broggi and Angelo Savoldi (architect) to expand the building.
