Eugen Böhringer
Eugen Böhringer (22January192219June2013) was a German racing driver and hotelier who spent the majority of his racing career on the Mercedes-Benz works team. A specialist in grueling long-distance events, his crowning achievement was victory in the 1962 European Rally Championship. Early life Eugen Böhringer was born on 22 January 1922 in Rotenberg, Stuttgart to Gottfried and Emma Böhringer. By 1925 the family owned a Mercedes-Knight 16/45 PS Tourenwagen, and Emma Böhringer was one of the first women in the Stuttgart area to have a driver's license. In 1928, his father started a bus service between Rotenberg and Untertürkheim for commuting employees of the Mercedes-Benz plant located there. Before becoming a driver, Eugen worked as a chef at the family's hotel and restaurant. Rotenberg (Stuttgart)
Rotenberg is a village which is a part of the Untertürkheim district of the City of Stuttgart, Germany. The area overlooks Untertürkheim and the Neckar valley and lies on the north and east slopes of the hill known as Württemberg (previously Wirtemberg). On this hill the first castle of the Counts of Württemberg was built in 1083 by Conrad of Beutelsbach who subsequently became Konrad I, Count of Württemberg and is considered the founder of the Württemberg dynasty. The hill also gave its name to the State of Württemberg. The castle was rebuilt in 1316 by Count Eberhard I. However, in about 1330 Eberhard built the "Old Castle" in what is now the centre of Stuttgart. The castle on Württemberg fell into disuse as a royal residence. The European Rally Championship (officially FIA European Rally Championship) is an rallying, automobile rally competition held annually on the European continent and organized by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA). The Mercedes-Benz W105 is the internal designation for a four-door executive car, manufactured by Daimler-Benz from 1956 to 1959, and marketed as the Mercedes-Benz Typ(e) 219.
