Euchemotrema
''Euchemotrema'' is a genus of small, air-breathing land snails, terrestrial animal, terrestrial pulmonate gastropod molluscs in the family Polygyridae. Shell description The shell of species in this genus is usually about 8 to 11 mm in diameter (about 3/8 inch). The shells are brown with a velvety surface, similar to that of ''Stenotrema'', and, in fact, this genus is sometimes combined into ''Stenotrema''.Pilsbry, Henry A. 1940. Land Mollusca of North America (North of Mexico)'. Acad. Nat. Sci. Philadelphia, Monograph 3, vol. 1(2): 675-688. These snails typically have a less complex aperture than ''Stenotrema'': "without a tooth within the outer arc of the lip and with no notch in the basal lip". There are also peculiarities of the male anatomy that separate the two genera. Distribution ''Euchemotrema'' is widely distributed in eastern and central North America. Species This genus includes the following species and subspecies: *''Euchemotrema cheatumi'' (R. W. Fulling ...

The Wichita Mountains pillsnail (''Euchemotrema wichitorum'') is a species of air-breathing land snail, a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusk in the family Polygyridae. The species is endemic to Oklahoma, the United States. Description ''Euchemotrema wichitorum'' was first described in 1972 by Branley A. Branson as ''Stenotrema wichitorum.'' The shell varies from light tan to dark brown. It has an average diameter of 8.3 mm and an average height of 4.6 mm. It is the second smallest species of its genus. Distribution and habitat It is endemic to the Wichita Mountains area in southwest Oklahoma. The type locality is located in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. Originally only being known from two counties, it has now been located in seven counties in southwest Oklahoma. It favors oak dense woodlands rather than the granite boulder fields of the area. They have a fire association, and charred Charring is a chemical process of incomplete combustion of certa ...

Accessed through: World Register of Marine Species at: http://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=993919 on 2021-02-11 The Polygyridae make up a significant proportion of the land snail fauna of eastern North America, and are also found in western North America, northern Central America, and are present on some Caribbean islands. The definitive reference to the group is Henry Pilsbry's 1940 monograph. Pilsbry, Henry A. 1940. Land Mollusca of North America (North of Mexico). Acad. Nat. Sci. ''Stenotrema'' is a genus of air-breathing land snails, terrestrial animal, terrestrial pulmonate gastropod molluscs in the family Polygyridae. These are typically small to medium-sized snails, with a velvety or hairy gastropod shell, shell surface, and a narrow aperture (mollusc), aperture which is usually closely guarded by well-developed "teeth". Distribution The genus occurs throughout most of North America, from Alaska, though Canada and the United States, into Mexico.Pilsbry, Henry A. 1940. North America
North America is a continent in the Northern Hemisphere and almost entirely within the Western Hemisphere. It is bordered to the north by the Arctic Ocean, to the east by the Atlantic Ocean, to the southeast by South America and the Caribbean Sea, and to the west and south by the Pacific Ocean. Because it is on the North American Plate, North American Tectonic Plate, Greenland is included as a part of North America geographically. North America covers an area of about , about 16.5% of Earth's land area and about 4.8% of its total surface. North America is the third-largest continent by area, following Asia and Africa, and the list of continents and continental subregions by population, fourth by population after Asia, Africa, and Europe. In 2013, its population was estimated at nearly 579 million people in List of sovereign states and dependent territories in North America, 23 independent states, or about 7.5% of the world's population.
