Ettlingen (; South Franconian: ''Eddlinge'') is a town in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, about south of the city of Karlsruhe and approximately from the border with Lauterbourg, in France's Bas-Rhin department. Ettlingen is the second largest town in the district of Karlsruhe, after Bruchsal. Geography Ettlingen is situated at the northern edge of the Black Forest on the Upper Rhine Plain. The Alb River arises in the hills of the Black Forest and flows through Ettlingen before emptying into the Rhine at Eggenstein-Leopoldshafen, making Ettlingen a central feature of the ''Albtal'', the Alb Valley. Adrian Ettlinger (January 26, 1925 – October 23, 2013) was an American electrical engineer and software developer and a pioneer in television and video technology. He has been described as a "visionary" and the "legendary" "engineering father" of non-linear video editing, and has been recognized for his contributions to a range of technologies important to the advancement of television and video as well as several other accomplishments. Early life Ettlinger was born on January 26, 1925, and studied Electrical Engineering at Purdue University, graduating in 1944. Family Adrian Ettlinger's parents were Eli and Ruth Ettlinger, his sister Geraldine. He was married to Carol Burns Ettlinger and had two children: Michael and Amanda. Elisabeth Ettlinger
Elisabeth Ettlinger, ( Lachmann; 14 July 1915 – 21 March 2012) was a German-born archaeologist and academic, who specialised in archaeology of the Roman provinces and Roman Switzerland. From 1964 to 1980, she taught at the University of Bern, having emigrated to Switzerland in the 1930s to escape Nazi Germany. Her research centred on Roman ceramics such as Terra Sigillata, and she co-founded ''Rei Cretariae Romanae Fautores'', a learned society dedicated to Roman pottery: she was its secretary, vice-president and then served as its president from 1971 to 1980. From September 1963 to June 1964, she was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. Honours Ettlinger was elected to the German Archaeological Institute in 1968, and as a corresponding member of the Austrian Archaeological Institute in 1975. Jacob Ettlinger
Jacob Ettlinger (17 March 1798 – 7 December 1871) ( he, יעקב עטלינגר) was a German rabbi and author, and one of the leaders of Orthodox Judaism. He is sometimes referred to as the ''Aruch la-Ner'' (ערוך לנר), after his best-known publication. Biography Ettlinger was born in Karlsruhe, Baden, and died in Altona, Prussia. He received his early education from his father Aaron, who was ''Klausrabbiner'' (rabbi of a small synagogue) in Karlsruhe. Aaron was also a recognized Talmudical scholar who was steeped in Kabbalah. He then went to study under the Rabbi of Karlsruhe, Rabbi Asher Wallerstein, the son of the famed Shaagas Aryeh. Wallerstein was also the Chief Rabbi of the entire Grand Duchy of Baden. Ettlinger remained his student until the age of 18. Ettlinger rounded off his Talmudical education in the yeshiva of Abraham Bing in Würzburg, one of the most significant Torah centers in Germany. Leopold Ettlinger
Leopold David Ettlinger (April 20, 1913 – July 4, 1989) was a Warburg Institute historian of the Italian renaissance and UC Berkeley Art Department Chair, from 1970 to 1980. He wrote some of his books together with his third wife Helen Shahrokh Ettlinger. He was born in Germany and came to England in 1938 as a refugee from the Nazi regime. When briefly interned on the Isle of Man he got to know other art historians from the Warburg Institute, which he joined in 1948, staying until 1964. From 1964 he was Durning-Lawrence Professor of the History of Art at London University (replacing Ernst Gombrich). In 1970 he moved to the US and Berkeley. He also taught at the University of Reading in England, and Yale. Helen Ettlinger was born in California and studied at Berkeley.
