Ethyle Batley
Ethyle Batley (born Alice Ethel Murray; 3 December 1876 – 23 April 1917) was a British film director, actress and screenwriter. She made nearly 70 films between 1912 and her early death in 1917. Early life and career Batley was born in December 1876 in Wigan, northwest England, the second daughter of an iron merchant. In the late 1890s, she travelled to London to work as a theatre actress, performing under the name Ethyle Gordon Murray. While working with a touring theatre company, Murray met Ernest Batley, an actor from East London. They were married on 22 June 1901 at a registry office ceremony in Wandsworth, and began their married life living in Battersea. In 1902, Ernest and Ethyle had their first child, actress Dorothy Audrey Batley, who was born on 18 January. Film career Ethyle's first directing credit was in October 1912, with the film '' Peggy Gets Rid of the Baby'', which starred Dorothy in the lead role. Wigan
Wigan ( ) is a large town in Greater Manchester, England, on the River Douglas, Lancashire, River Douglas. Battersea
Battersea is a large district in south London, part of the London Borough of Wandsworth, England. It is centred southwest of Charing Cross and extends along the south bank of the River Thames. Dorothy Batley
Dorothy Batley (18 January 1902 – 8 December 1983) was a British actress of the stage and screen, with a notable period as a child actor in the period 1910 to 1916. Both her parents directed films in the period before and during World War I, often featuring Dorothy as the spirited and resourceful child heroine. As a young adult in the post-war years Batley worked as a theatre actress. In 1930 she married the film actor and director Guy Newall (his third marriage). The couple had a daughter, born in 1932, but her husband died in 1937. Batley had returned to the stage by 1941. She resumed her film career after 30 years when she was cast in minor roles in several motion pictures from 1949. From the late 1950s to the mid-1960s Batley was cast in a number of minor roles in a various television series.
