Esteri Tomula
Esteri Tomula (October 31, 1920 in Helsinki, Finland – 1998) was a ceramic artist and designer who worked at the Arabia ceramics factory in Helsinki, Finland from 1947 to 1984. Esteri Tomula is known for her decorative work often inspired by Finland's flora. Her most famous designs include the tableware series ''Pastoraali,'' ''Fennica'' and ''Krokus'', and she often collaborated with Kaj Franck, a famous Finnish ceramic designer. Tomula used a special technique that combined printing and painting: the black outlines were first screen-printed and then filled with colorful, hand-painted details. The ''Esteri'' pattern, originally designed by Tomula in 1973, was relaunched in 2017 by Arabia to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Finland. Her most collected design ''Krokus'', an example of her signature silk-screen printing technique, was only in production for two years between 1978 and 1979. Arabia (brand)
Arabia is a Finnish ceramics company, founded in 1873 by Rörstrand, and currently owned by Fiskars. Arabia has specialized in kitchenware and tableware. The original Arabia porcelain factory was located in Toukola (Helsinki). It later housed the Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture. Ulla Procopé, Esteri Tomula and Kaj Franck were among the best-known artists and designers for the company. In 2016 the Arabia factory in Finland closed. All Arabia products are now made in Thailand and Romania. Kaj Franck
Kaj Gabriel Franck (9 November 1911 Vyborg, Grand Duchy of Finland – 26 September 1989 Santorini, Greece) was one of the leading figures of Finnish design and an influential figure in design and applied arts between 1940 and 1980. Franck's parents were Kurt Franck and Genéviève "Vevi" Ahrenberg. He was a Swedish-speaking Finn, and he was of German descent through his father. Franck was artistic director of the Arabia ceramics company (now part of Iittala Group) and artistic director and teacher at the College of Applied Arts – the predecessor of the University of Art and Design Helsinki (now Aalto University) – since 1945, but created designs for other companies as well. He was awarded the Prince Eugen Medal in 1964. The Design Forum Finland awards the yearly Kaj Franck Design Prize to a designer or team of designers working in the spirit of the late Kaj Franck. Design Museum, Helsinki
Design Museum ( fi, Designmuseo, sv, Designmuseet) is a museum in Helsinki devoted to the exhibition of both Finnish and foreign design, including industrial design, fashion, and graphic design. The building is situated in Kaartinkaupunki, on Korkeavuorenkatu Street, and is owned by the Republic of Finland through Senate Properties. The building was completed in 1895 and originally built as a school building for the Swedish school Läroverket för gossar och flickor. The museum, which is 140 years old (2013) and one of the oldest in the world – was first founded in 1873 but has operated in its present premises, a former school, designed by architect Gustaf Nyström in 1894 in the neo-Gothic style, since 1978. In 2002, the museum changed its name from Taideteollisuusmuseo to Designmuseo ("Design Museum") because the original name was too long and complicated. The museum also has a cafe and shop.
