Espoir Basket Club
Espoir Basket Club (in English: Hope Basketball Club), also known as Espoir BC, is a Gabonese semi-professional basketball team based in Libreville. They play in the Estuaire Province's Ligue de Basket-ball de l’Estuaire (Libabe), and won the province championship in 2022 after defeating former champions Clutch Time in the final, 73–37. As runners-up of the 2022 Gabonese Cup and replacement of champions Clutch Time, Espoir earned the right to play in the 2023 BAL qualification. In September 2022, Espoir recruited Stéphane Lasme, widely considered the best Gabonese player ever, as a reinforcement. Mickael Oganda is the team's current head coach. Estuaire Province
Estuaire is the most populous of Gabon's nine provinces. It covers an area of 20,740 km. The provincial capital is Libreville, which is also Gabon's national capital. 2023 BAL Qualification
The qualification for the 2023 BAL season, also known as Road to BAL 2023, was the 3rd edition of the qualifying tournaments for the Basketball Africa League. The tournaments were organised by FIBA Africa and are held from 10 October to 27 November 2022. The format was similar to the previous two seasons, with a group phase and an elite 16 being held. Stéphane Lasme
Yann Ulrich Stéphane Lasme (born December 17, 1982) is a Gabonese former professional basketball player. He played college basketball at the University of Massachusetts (UMass), with the UMass Minutemen, and he was selected by the Golden State Warriors in the second round, 46th overall, in the 2007 NBA draft. In 2016 Stephane won the EuroCup Championship and earned the Finals MVP award, as well as, an All-EuroLeague Second Team selection in 2014 and won the EuroLeague Best Defender award in 2013, among others. The tournament consisted of 10 teams in the 2023 season, and the location is usually rotated between different cities in the country. Basketball Africa League
The Basketball Africa League (BAL) is Africa's premier men's basketball league. The league consists of twelve teams, each qualified through their domestic competition, similar to the format of the UEFA Champions League. The league is a joint effort between the National Basketball Association (NBA) and International Basketball Federation (FIBA) with sponsorship from Nike, Inc., Nike, Air Jordan and Pepsi. Its 2021 BAL season, inaugural season started with the qualifying rounds in October 2019 and the regular season in May 2021. The competition replaces FIBA's Africa Basketball League as the continent's top-tier league.
