Ismail ( ar, إسماعيل or , ) is an Arabic given name. It corresponds to the English name Ishmael. Etymology and meaning The literal translation of the name ''Ismail'' is "heard by God" and according to Abrahamic tradition, it refers to the yearning of Abraham and his wife, Sarah, to have a child. Ismail's mother, however, was not Sarah, but Hagar, Sarah's maidservant, who Sarah gave to Abraham as a concubine because she was unable to have a child. Sarah later does give birth to a son, Isaac. According to Genesis, the name is given by God as He heard the cries of Hagar who had been mistreated by Sarah after becoming pregnant and run away. Ismail Fahmy ( arz, اسماعيل فهمى) (2 October 1922 – 21 November 1997) was an Egyptian diplomat and politician. He served as ambassador to Austria (1968–1971), tourism minister (1973), foreign minister (1973–1977) and deputy prime minister (1975–1977). He was awarded to professorship. He resigned from the government in 1977 to protest Anwar Sadat's visit to Jerusalem. Ismail "Baboo" Ebrahim (5 November 1946 – 18 July 2020) was a South African cricketer. A slow left-arm orthodox spin bowler, Ebrahim played 48 first-class matches and two List A matches, mostly for Natal, between 1971 and 1984. He played in the Dadabhay Trophy tournament for non-white cricketers until the 1977–78 season, when he represented Natal B in the Castle Bowl, the second division of "white" first-class cricket, and would go on to play in the Currie Cup in the 1978–79 season. In addition to playing in the previously exclusively white Currie Cup, Ebrahim was one of several non-white cricketers to join white cricket clubs in the 1970s in spite of the apartheid laws that existed during his cricket career. İsmail Beşikçi (born 1939 in İskilip, Turkey) is a Turkish sociologist, philosopher, revolutionary, and writer. He is a PEN Honorary Member. He has served 17 years in prison on propaganda charges stemming from his writings about the Kurdish population in Turkey. Mirza Ismail Beg Hamdani (died March 1794) was a Mughal Commander. Son of Mirza Munim Beg and a kinsman of Mirza Najaf Khan, he along with his family fled Persia at the rise of Nadir Shah. Initially a stalwart of the Maratha's he would defect in 1790, in order to check the rising power of Mahadji Scinde.
