Esenguly
Esenguly (formerly Hasan-Kuly, Gasan-Kuli) is a city in and administrative center of Esenguly District, Balkan Province, Turkmenistan. In 1989 its population was 5,823. Etymology The name is of obscure origin. A clan of that name, part of the Yomud tribe, exists, but local elders have stated the name is of a long-dead person. Geography Esenguly lies on a flat, barren plain, just off the coast of the Caspian Sea. The city lies at around below mean sea level. Climate Esenguly has a desert climate (Köppen climate classification ''BWk''), with cool winters and hot summers. Temperatures are not as extreme as other parts of Turkmenistan due to the town's proximity to the Caspian Sea. Precipitation is low, but is highest in winter and lowest in summer. Transportation A road leads north to Çekişler and Ekarem. Route P-16 connects these towns to Gumdag. Balkan Province
Balkan Region ( tk, Balkan welaýaty, Балкан велаяты) is the westernmost of the five regions of Turkmenistan. Clockwise from north it borders Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan (north); two provinces of Turkmenistan (east), Iran (south), and the Caspian Sea (west). The capital city is Balkanabat, formerly known as Nebit Dag. The region's boundaries are identical to those of the former ''Krasnovodsk Oblast' '', a Soviet-era province of the Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic. This oblast was liquidated and restored repeatedly in the 20th century, concluding with its abolition in 1988. However, the administrative boundaries of the region were restored in 1991 when Balkan Region was established. The province covers 139,270 square kilometers and counts 553,500 residents (2005 estimate). Districts Of Turkmenistan
The districts of Turkmenistan ( tk, etraplar, sing. ''etrap'') are territorial entities below the provinces of Turkmenistan ( tk, welaýatlar, sing. '' welaýat''). They may be counties, cities, or boroughs of cities. The heads of the districts ( tk, häkim, translated as "governor" for districts of a ''welaýat'' and "mayor" for cities or boroughs of a city) are appointed by the President of Turkmenistan (Constitution of Turkmenistan, Articles 80-81). Regarding cities "with district status" ( tk, etrap hukukly), by Turkmen law, "...such cities must have population over 30,000 and be the administrative center of a province (welaýat); headed by a presidentially appointed häkim." Though this officially limits the possible number of such cities to five (the number of provinces), in reality other cities are periodically accorded the status of a district. The Caspian Sea is the world's largest inland body of water, often described as the world's largest lake or a full-fledged sea. Magtymguly (city)
Magtymguly (formerly Garrygala, Kara-Kala, russian: Кара-Кала) is a city ( tk, şäher) in far south-western Turkmenistan in Balkan Province. It lies west of Aydere and is the administrative capital of Magtymguly District. In 1972 it had a population of 5700 inhabitants, rising to 8412 in 1989. It is located in the foothills of the Kopet Dag mountain range, and it lies on the Sumbar River, a tributary of the Atrek River. History The ruins of a vast fortress on the river bank are located in Magtymguly. The fortress was used as a base by the Armenian Kings Tigranes I to Tigranes VI. Etymology Atanyyazow explains that Turkmen originally called the fortress, which he asserts was built here by Shah of Persia Mohammad, "Ganlygala" ("bloody fortress", from ''gan'' "blood" and ''gala'' "fortress") because of the amount of blood shed in fighting over it.
