Johann Heinrich Alfred Escher vom Glas, known as Alfred Escher (20 February 1819 – 6 December 1882) was a Swiss politician, business leader and railways pioneer. Thanks to his numerous political posts and his significant role in the foundation and management of the Swiss Northeastern Railway, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Credit Suisse, Swiss Life and the Gotthard Railway, Escher had an unmatched influence on Switzerland's political and economic development in the 19th century. Lydia Escher
Lydia Welti Escher, (née Lydia Escher, 10 July 1858 in Zürich-Enge – 12 December 1891 in Genève-Champel) was a Swiss patron of the arts and the daughter of Augusta Escher-Uebel (1838–1864) and Alfred Escher (1819–1882), who, among many other business interests, was one of the founders of the Gotthardbahn. Lydia Escher was one of the richest women in Switzerland in the 19th century, a patron of the arts who most notably established the Gottfried Keller Foundation. Rudolf George Escher
Rudolf Escher (8 January 1912 in Amsterdam – 17 March 1980 in De Koog) was a Dutch composer and music theorist. He left compositions for chamber orchestra and orchestra, vocal and one electronic composition. Escher was also a poet, painter and writer. Biography Youth Escher was born the son of the geologist and mineralogist Berend George Escher and the Swiss Emma Brosy. His father was a son of the engineer George Arnold Escher and half-brother of the graphic artist Maurits Cornelis Escher. At the age of four, Escher moved with his family to Batavia, Dutch East Indies, where his father worked as a geologist for the Batavian Petroleum Company. Sandra Escher
Alexandre Dorothée Marie Adriaan Charlotte Escher (14 June 1945 – 31 May 2021) was a Dutch mental health advocate and researcher. Early life, family and education Sandra Escher was born in The Hague, the Netherlands. She trained at the School of Journalism in Utrecht. Sandra began a three-year follow-up on 80 children hearing voices. On this research she earned her MPhil and PhD in Birmingham. She earned her PhD at the University of Maastricht. Career Escher began to work at the University of Maastricht, department of Social Psychiatry. She became also a senior staff member at the Community mental Health Centre in Maastricht in 1987. Since that time she works together with Marius Romme on the hearing voices project. With Romme she wrote two books which have been translated into several languages. Escher Museum
Escher in Het Paleis (''Escher in The Palace'') is a museum in The Hague, Netherlands, featuring the works of the Dutch graphical artist M. C. Escher. It is housed in the Lange Voorhout Palace since November 2002. In 2015 it was revealed that many of the prints on display at the museum were replicas, scanned from original prints and printed onto the same type of paper used by Escher, rather than original Escher prints as they had been labeled.. History The museum is housed in the Lange Voorhout Palace, a former royal residence dating back to the eighteenth century. Queen Emma bought the stately house in 1896. She used it as a winter palace from March 1901 until her death in March 1934. Berend George Escher
Berend George Escher (4 April 1885 – 11 October 1967) was a Dutch geologist. Escher had a broad interest, but his research was mainly on crystallography, mineralogy and volcanology. He was a pioneer in experimental geology. He was a half-brother of the artist Maurits Cornelis Escher, M.C. Escher, and had some influence on his work due to his knowledge of crystallography. M.C. Escher created a woodcut ''ex libris'' for his brother 'Beer' with a stylized image of a volcano around 1922 (Bool number 91). Escher was the son of the civil engineer George Arnold Escher, G. A. Escher, a director of the Dutch watermanagement (''Rijkswaterstaat'') and his first wife, Charlotte Marie Hartitzsch. Escher spent his youth in Switzerland. Its headquarters were in the Zürich quarter of Escher Wyss, which takes its name from the company. History The company was founded, as Escher Wyss & Cie., in 1805 by Hans Caspar Escher and Salomon von Wyss. After having originally started the company as a textile spinning business, the two expanded their enterprise to include a machine shop that manufactured textile machinery, water wheels, water turbines, power transmission equipment, and starting in 1835, ships, including boilers and steam engines. George Arnold Escher
George Arnold Escher (10 May 1843 – 14 June 1939) was a Dutch civil engineer and a foreign advisor to the Japanese government during the Meiji period.Louman, Johannes. (2007). Career Escher was hired by the Japanese government as a foreign advisor from September 1873 to July 1878, along with fellow Dutch civil engineers Johannis de Rijke and Cornelis Johannes van Doorn. Escher Wyss is a quarter in the district 5 of Zürich, centered on the Escher-Wyss-Platz square. Escher Wyss was formerly a part of Aussersihl municipality, which was incorporated into Zürich in 1893. Arnold Escher von der Linth (8 June 1807 in Zürich12 July 1872) was a Swiss geologist, the son of Hans Conrad Escher von der Linth (1767–1823). He made the first ascent of the Lauteraarhorn on 8 August 1842 together with Pierre Jean Édouard Desor and Christian Girard, and guides Melchior Bannholzer and Jakob Leuthold. He studied geology and other sciences in Geneva, where one of his teachers was Nicolas Theodore de Saussure, and in Berlin as a student of Leopold von Buch and Alexander von Humboldt. He headed the "Great Council of Switzerland" in 1798, a period of French occupation.
