Erongo Battery Energy Storage System
The Erongo Battery Energy Storage System, also Erongo BESS, is a planned battery energy storage system installation in Namibia. The BESS, the first of its kind in the country and in the Southern African region, will be capable of providing 72MWh of clean energy to the Namibian grid. Location The BESS unit would be located at the site of NamPower's ''Omburu Substation'', approximately , southeast of the city of Omaruru in the Erongo Region, in central Namibia. The geographical coordinates of this location are:21°29'49.0"S, 16°01'40.0"E (Latitude:-21.496944; Longitude:16.027778). Overview The BESS station has storage capacity of 58 megawatts. Its design allows for a discharge capacity of 72MWh of energy into the Namibian grid. Omaruru, Namibia
Omaruru is a city in the Erongo Region of central Namibia. The town has 14,000 inhabitants and owns of land. It is situated near Mount Erongo, on the usually dry Omaruru River. It is located on the main paved road from Swakopmund to Otjiwarongo. The name in the Otjiherero language means 'bitter milk', as Herero cattle herds used to graze on a local bush that turned their milk bitter. Omaruru is known for its annual festival where the Herero people commemorate their past local chiefs, its winery, and for the dinosaur footprints at nearby Otjihaenamparero. History Omaruru was established in 1863 by Wilhelm Zeraua, the first chief of the ''White Flag'' clan of the OvaHerero people. Erongo Region
Erongo is one of the 14 regions of Namibia. The capital is Swakopmund. It is named after Mount Erongo, a well-known landmark in Namibia and in this area. Erongo contains the municipalities of Walvis Bay, Swakopmund, Henties Bay and Omaruru, as well as the towns Arandis, Karibib and Usakos. All the main centres within this region are connected by paved roads. The Erongo Region had a population of 150,809 in 2011. As of 2020, it had 119,784 registered voters. Battery storage is the fastest responding dispatchable source of power on electric grids, and it is used to stabilise those grids, as battery storage can transition from standby to full power within milliseconds to deal with grid failures. Balama Solar Power Station
The Balama Solar Power Station, is a solar power plant under construction in Mozambique. The project is owned and under development by Solarcentury an independent power producer (IPP), based in the United Kingdom. The solar farm will be connected to an 8.5 MW/8.5MWh battery storage system. The two energy sources will then be synchronized with the existing 15.4 MW diesel-fired thermal power source, to form a 35.15 MW hybrid power station.
