Ernie Gaskin
Ernie Gaskin Sr. (1933–2020) was an English greyhound trainer. He was three times winner of the Trainers Championship and won 12 classic races. Career In 1961 Ernie Gaskin's Clopook ran in the English Derby final just two months after being granted a trainers licence. He relinquished his licence in 1963 after Horney Council objected to his kennels and he sold his greyhounds at Aldridges sales. In 1977 he established new kennels in Nazeing, Essex. Gaskin bred many of his own greyhounds including Devilish Dolores that won the 1980 Oaks and was also the breeder of the 1971 English Greyhound Derby champion Dolores Rocket. Further classic wins were achieved by Kinda Friendly, Mobile Bank and Ballygroman Jim before he won his first Trainers Championship in 1988, the same year that he had two Derby finalists with Curryhills Gara and Comeragh Boy. 1961 English Greyhound Derby
The 1961 Greyhound Derby took place during June with the final being held on 24 June 1961 at White City Stadium. The winner Palms Printer received £2,000 and was trained by Paddy McEvoy and owned by Alf Heale. Competition Report The Racing Manager selected 36 greyhounds leaving 12 remaining places. They would be gained from three afternoon trial sessions and eight qualifying heats to determine the 12 final places. Qualifiers included Winter Bell and Clopook, the latter trained by 28 year old Ernie Gaskin (much later known as Gaskin Sr.) Gaskin was a new trainer only being granted his licence two months before the Derby started. The ante-post favourites list was headed by Oregon Prince (8-1) and Spider Hill (10-1). Walthamstow Stadium was a greyhound racing track in the London Borough of Waltham Forest in east London.BBC News - Walthamstow race track to close' It was regarded as the leading greyhound racing stadium in Britain following the closure of White City in 1984. The stadium closed on 16 August 2008. Greyhound racing Crooked Billet In the early part of the 20th century the Myrtle Grove sports ground was built and used by the Walthamstow Grange Football Club from 1908. By 1929 the ground hosted greyhound racing for the first time and was known as the Crooked Billet Greyhound and whippet track (named after the nearby Crooked Billet public house). The 1971 Greyhound Derby took place during June with the final being held on 26 June 1971 at White City Stadium. The winner was Dolores Rocket and the winning owner received £10,000. Dolores Rocket was bred and reared by his owner Bert White. Competition Report With the National Greyhound Racing Club allowing trainers to seed+ their greyhounds wide for the first time it was generally agreed that there would be less crowding in races. Little County and Moordyke Spot had both retired but defending champion John Silver was entered for the competition. Clohast Rebel trained by Geoff De Mulder set a time of 28.28sec in a solo trial, two spots faster than the track record held by Yellow Printer. Nazeing
Nazeing is a village and parish in Essex, England. Within the parish are the separate settlements of Upper Nazeing, Middle Nazeing, and Lower Nazeing. The Prime Meridian passes to the west of Lower Nazeing. Location and topography Nazeing is approximately four miles north of Waltham Abbey, one mile south-west of Harlow, and is bounded on the west by the River Lea. Laurels (greyhounds)
The Laurels is an original classic greyhound competition held at Perry Barr Stadium. It was run at Wimbledon Stadium from 1930 until 1997. It then moved to Belle Vue Stadium in 1998 and remained there until 2017 when it switched to Newcastle Stadium. After two years at Newcastle and a cancellation in 2020 due to COVID-19 it switched to Perry Barr in 2021. competition lost its Category 1 status but was still regarded as one of the most valuable prizes during the racing year. The Arena Racing Company gained the prestigious competition in 2017 from the GRA and it returned to Category 1 status in 2022. The Trainers' Championship currently rebranded as the Trainers' Judgement Night is a competition for the leading greyhound trainers in the United Kingdom. History The competition was inaugurated in 1977 at (Brough Park) and is contested by the six leading trainers based on points gained from open race success from the previous year. Grand National (greyhounds)
The Grand National is an original classic greyhound racing competition held at Crayford Stadium over the hurdles. It was run at White City Stadium from 1928 until 1984, it moved to Hall Green Stadium in 1985 and then on to Wimbledon Stadium in 1999. In 2012, the Greyhound Racing Association allowed the race to leave their portfolio and it switched to Central Park Stadium in Sittingbourne. Central Park held the event until 2022 when it was cancelled in May before Ladbrokes stepped in to sponsor the event which was then held at Crayford for the first time. Sherrys Prince holds the record of winning the event three times from 1970 to 1972, while trainers Seamus Cahill and Ricky Holloway have both trained four winners.
