Ernest Loosen
Ernst Loosen is a German winemaker and owner of the wine producer Weingut Dr. Loosen, located just outside Bernkastel in the Mosel wine region. With over 130,000 annual bottle production, he is one of the larger producers in the Mosel region. He is particularly known for the quality of his Rieslings, having won "Riesling of the Year" in 1989 as awarded by the German wine trade magazine ''Feinschmecker''. In 1996 Ernst took over the historic J.L. Wolf estate, in the Pfalz region of Germany. Now known as Villa Wolf, there he produces Riesling in the style of the Rhine Valley, as well as the several Pinot varieties that are traditional in that area. In 2001, Gault-Millau named Ernst Loosen as the German winemaker of the year, and in 2005, Ernst Loosen was selected as ''Decanters "Man of the Year". Gerhard Eichelmann (born in 1962) is a leading German wine critic with an international influence on German wine. Biography Eichelmann was born to a family of part-time wine growers in the German wine region of Franconia. He was educated at the universities of Göttingen, Paris and Würzburg and trained in economics. Subsequently he worked for twelve years as management consultant, but changed career, in 1997, at the age of thirty-five, and founded a publishing house in Heidelberg, specialized in literature on wine. He resigned to devote his full attention to writing about wine, which led him to taste a great number of wines in Germany. In 1997, Eichelmann began writing a wine periodical in paperback format called ''Mondo'', which was published every second month, later quarterly. German Wine Classification
The German wine classification system puts a strong emphasis on standardization and factual completeness, and was first implemented by the German Wine Law of 1971. Nearly all of Germany's vineyards are delineated and registered as one of approximately 2,600 Einzellagen ('individual sites'), and the produce from any vineyard can be used to make German wine at any quality level, as long as the must weight of the grapes reaches the designated minimum level. As the current German system does not classify vineyards by quality, the measure of wine ’quality’ is the ripeness of the grapes alone. Approximately 200 wine makers have been organised since 1910 in the Verband Deutscher Prädikats- und Qualitätsweingüter (VDP). Gault et Millau is a French restaurant guide. It was founded by two restaurant critics, Henri Gault and Christian Millau in 1965. Points system Gault Millau rates on a scale of 1 to 20, with 20 being the highest. Restaurants given below 10 points are rarely listed. The points are awarded based on the quality of the food, with comments about service, price or the atmosphere of the restaurant given separately.
